Oregon State heads south for meets with USC, Minnesota, and UCLA
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Beaver swimming team is set to continue their Pac-12 season this weekend with two meets in Southern California.
Oregon State is coming off of a split result New Year's Eve meet in San Diego where they captured a win over the University of Incarnated Word but fell to the University of San Diego. The meet was in an outdoor facility, the first time the Beavers had swam in that environment this season.
"I think the San Diego State meet really taught us a lot about overcoming adversity and challenges in the moment," Buffin said. "It's the same process of taking things, like the new outdoor environment we were in, and continuing to focus on exactly what we need to improve on to get better week to week. "
On Friday Oregon State will take to the pool for a tri-meet with USC and Minnesota, who are ranked at No. 11 and No. 16 respectively. The meet is at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center and set for a 2 PM start.
"We're swimming this week against some of the top teams in the country, and we're going into this week focusing on our races and what we are doing and trying not to focus on what they're doing," Buffin said. "We want to use them and the competition as a place where we can get faster and we can become even more competitive."
The Beavers finish out the Southern California portion of the schedule the next day with a Saturday morning dual meet against UCLA at Speiker Aquatics Center
USC and UCLA both come into the weekend undefeated in dual meets on the year, and the meets mark the beginning of a run of dual meets with Pac-12 schools leading up to the Pac-12 Championships at the end of February and in early March.
"We're going into what is probably the hardest part of our competition schedule and that's exactly what we want coming up on Pac-12's," Buffin said. "The team is very aware that this is going to be a very challenging part of this season, but the focus is on how we are going to be better now than we were in the fall or even the winter invites, and how we are going to use these meets to keep getting better before we go to Pac-12's."
