Beavers Head North for Sundodger Invitational
September 06, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Following a win in its 2018 season opener, the Oregon State cross country team aims to keep the momentum rolling as it heads north to Seattle for the Sundodger Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.
"It's always good to get a win early on in the season," began second year head coach Louie Quintana. "It showed that we have done a nice job training and have laid a good foundation for this season."
Held at Lincoln Park, the women's 6,000-meter race will begin at 11 a.m., and is to be followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 11:35 a.m. The course is a mixture of grass, dirt, light gravel and bark chips starting and finishing on a grass playing field.
This week's field features five other schools, including two top-five regionally ranked teams in Boise State (No. 3) and Washington (No. 4); Oregon State opened the season at No. 10 in the regional rankings. Trinity Western, Pepperdine and Seattle University round out the field of competition.
The Beavers are running an 11-woman contingent this weekend, many of whom are making their first start of the season. Mari Friedman, Haley Wolf, Alexa Hayes, Brigette Takeuchi, Juliana Mount and Audrey Lookner are all set for their first race of the season.
This is the first race for Mount who earned NCAA All-Region honors at the end of last season.
Sara Christianson, Rebecca Ledsham, Alyssa Foote, Batya Beard and Maddie Fuhrman are all competing for the second week in a row following the team win at the 1st Annual Viking Buster a week ago.
"To be about 12 or 13 girls strong is important," said Quintana. "We have a really good team running this weekend, and having that depth will allow us to move up quickly in the region."
The challenge heading into this weekend is managing the emotions that accompany getting back into competition form.
"We've spent a lot of time this week sitting down with the student-athletes, getting a game plan in order because something is going to go wrong and we know that," said Quintana. "Being able to manage that emotionally will allow us to still be successful."
Results will be posted following the conclusion of the races and will be available on OSUBeavers.com.
