Orange Team Comes Out On Top
September 29, 2018 | Women's Swimming
The Orange Team takes a 132-107 win over the Black Team.
CORVALLIS – Team Orange came away with the top team score during the Orange and Black intrasquad meet on Saturday night at the Osborn Aquatic Center winning 132 to 107.
"I thought this was a great afternoon for all of us," said head coach Jennifer Buffin. "To see where all the freshmen are in some of their primary events and to see where we all are girls are after a couple weeks of training after coming back from the relay meet at Nevada, we are in a much different place than what we have been in other seasons.
To see the girls working and focusing on things we have been talking about in practice such as their turns, the speed going through those turns and finishing the races was great. I thought everyone just did a great job of being competitive with each other throughout the meet.
The Orange Team, led by team captain Arianna Letrari, took event wins in eight of the 13 total events. Letrari captured one of those victories in the 200 freestyle.
"The Orange Team only had 10 swimmers compared to the Black Team's 11," said Letrari. "I talked with all the girls on the team to come up with our lineups for each event. Even though I was the captain of the Orange team, I wanted to team to come up with a plan together on the best way for us to potentially win."
Freshman Lauren Yon was one of the top swimmers that helped the Orange Team capture a victory by finishing first in the 1000 freestyle, the 200 IM and the 200 breaststroke. Lindsay Swail, Jacuie Price and Kristina Schneider also captured event victories before the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Schneider, Letrari, Swail and Price would take the final event of the evening.
"Everyone was so motivated to win this," continues Letrari. "The Orange Team's moto was to smash the Black Team like we are smashing oranges to make juice. I wanted everyone on my team to know what they had to do, and I think we all came together this week to make it happen. That is truly amazing."
Junior Felicia Anderson captained the Black Team that would placed five girls in the first two events of the evening with Anderson and Cali Rowland finishing first in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke respectively. Some other top finishers for the Black Team were Chloe Bowman and Paige Maynard in the 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
"I think each team captain looked at their teams and where they could score a team point," said Buffin. "Girls stepped up on both teams to swim events that they normally wouldn't swim, and that's what it's going to be like for us when we go against other teams.
We are going to see a quick turnaround from event to event next week against ASU. To see the girls swimming fast and having fun is what our ultimate goal is here. We are going to take this next week to tune up some of the things we have been working on these last few weeks to try to be faster than we were this week."
Oregon State returns to action next Friday at home against Arizona State. The meet is slated for 6 p.m. at the Osborn Aquatic Center.
