CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell to Arizona State in three sets Friday night.
It is the second straight season, the Beavers posted a 10-2 record during the non-conference schedule before sliding to open the Pac-12 slate with three straight losses. The 2017 squad went on to reach the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in program history.
The Beavers lost by scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-19 to fall to 10-5 overall and 0-3 in the Pac-12. Arizona State improved to 11-4, 2-1.
"Our offense was vanilla, Arizona State played well and dug everything," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We had moments with our passing but overall we just have it in any aspect of the game. We'll need to be better to win games in this conference."
Oregon State was in the thick of things early in the opening set scoring five straight points on a pair of kills by Maddie Goings, an ace by Kayla Ellis and a block by Maddy Gravley, to take a 7-5 lead. But the Sun Devils answered with a 5-1 run to seize the lead at 10-8. The team battled back-and-forth until ASU opened the lead to 21-16. Arizona State reach set point at 24-19 and the Beavers fought off three straight points with kills from Lindsey Schell and Daniela Vargas and a block by Amy Underdown before ASU secured the set, 25-22.
In the second set, ASU took a quick 3-0 lead but Oregon State settled and tied the set at 9-9. The Sun Devils rattled off seven of the next eight points to take charge of the set and went on to take it, 25-16. Underdown came alive in the period for the Beavers with six kills and Vargas registered three blocks.
The Beavers quickly found themselves behind 10-4 in the third set. A successful challenge by OSU briefly stemmed the tide and the Beavers rolled off three straight points. Arizona State used a 6-1 run to regain the momentum and opened the lead to 16-7. ASU went on to secure the set and match, 25-19
Game Notes: Three Beavers – Lindsey Schell, Maddie Goings and Amy Underdown – notched nine kills apiece to lead the team … Grace Massey tallied 13 digs and Underdown added 11 … Maddy Gravley registered five blocks and Daniela Vargas posted her season-best with four blocks for Oregon State … Kayla Ellis collected a pair of aces to give her 11 on the season.
Next Up: OSU is back in action in Gill Coliseum on Sunday at noon to face No. 24 Arizona. The match is the Beavers' Dam Worth It event. Dam Worth It is an OSU student-athlete driven initiative with the goal to destigmatize and raise awareness about student-athlete mental health issues.
