Get to Know Katherine Manzione
September 20, 2018 | Women's Swimming
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Welcome to the first installment of our series introducing the newcomers to the 2018-19 swim team. This week we're featuring Katherine Manzione. She is a freshman hailing from Portland, Ore. specializing in the freestyle and breaststroke.
What are you looking forward to most about swimming at Oregon State?
I'm excited for the experiences I will gain from competing at the Division 1 level.
How do you spend your time outside the pool?
I'm incredibly invested in my school work and studying. However, I still make sure to spend some quality time with friends, listening to music and making art because every student-athlete needs a good balance between academics, athletics and being social.
What is your first memory of being in the pool?
You know, it's funny because when I was little I was deathly afraid of the water. I remember clinging to my dad in the ocean in Hawaii because I was so scare, but hey, look at me now!
Who is your role model?
My mother because I have never met someone who embodied so much resiliency and grit, and she never stands down from a challenge. She has and will always be my greatest role model.
Do you have any pre-meet superstitions?
I can't help but to get a little nervous or anxious before every meet. However, when I do have pre-meet superstitions, I just pray, and God helps me through it.
What other sports did you play growing up?
I played basketball and tennis growing up. I also went to nationals for TaeKwonDo in middle school, but I had decided it was more important to me to fully commit myself to swimming, the sport that I truly loved. I believe that regardless or talent or success, it is important for people to do what they enjoy the most.
What are you planning on studying?
Currently, I am studying to graduate with a dual degree in mathematics and innovation management. I am also in the Honors College here at Oregon State. I plan to graduate in three years and spend my fourth year interning for the athletic department while taking enough classes to still be eligible to compete.
What is one hidden talent you have?
I can fall asleep at any time and anywhere. Seriously, I'm not kidding. You can ask anyone on my team! It really comes in handy on road trips to swim meets/competitions.
What song/band is most likely to be playing on your phone?
My music choices usually depend on my mood. Pre-meet, I would say I listen to a lot of Post Malone, Calvin Harris, or Aminé. If I'm just lounging around, I usually listen to Billie Eilish, Quinn XCII, or Cold War Kids. If I'm driving in the car, I listen to anything classic rock like Led Zepplin and Tom Petty or some alternative like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
What is your favorite TV Show?
Friends or Gilmore Girls. Friends has always been a long time, light-hearted favorite. I always watch Gilmore Girls with my mom, I can't watch an episode without her!
What actress would play you in a movie?
Lucy Lie, because she usually plays a strong independent woman.
Oregon State will host their Orange and Black meet next Saturday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. at the Osborn Aquatic Center.
