Get to Know Haley Wolf
September 12, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Welcome back to the third installment of our series introducing the newcomers to the 2018 cross country team. This week we're featuring Haley Wolf. She is a freshman hailing from Mesa, Ariz.
Why did you choose Oregon State/What are you looking forward to most about running at Oregon State?
So many factors influenced my decision in choosing Oregon State. Corvallis is such a beautiful town and I am so excited to be a part of the awesome community here. Coach Quintana won me over with his infectious enthusiasm and relentless dedication to developing this running program. The cross country team is led by amazing, strong women who all work incredibly hard and radiate positive energy. It's an honor to be a part of this building program and I'm so excited for what this season has in store for us!
What do you enjoy most about running?
Running is an outlet for me to relieve any stress or anxieties, where I can really feel in tune with my body while enjoying the surrounding beautiful nature and scenery. I am also fascinated by what the human body and mind can accomplish, and running is such a pure sport to test those limits.
How do you like to spend your time away from running?
When I am not running I love to explore the outdoors, cook (and EAT), hike with my goats, and play piano and cello.
What was your favorite experience from this summer?
My favorite thing this summer was exploring Telluride, Colo. with my older sister and watching a wild buffalo take a shower on Catalina Island.
Who is your role model?
My dad is my role model. His perseverance and determination to overcome any challenge is truly inspiring and I admire his courage to keep running and not let his physical limitations own him.
Do you have any pre-race superstitions?
I don't have any pre-race superstitions, but I always run with something reminding me of Mother Mary (either a rose petal, picture, or scapular) so I know I'm not suffering alone.
What are you planning to study at Oregon State?
I am planning on majoring in Physics but I am keeping an open mind in case my interests change, which I expect will happen at some point during college.
What other sports do you play, or grew up playing?
I used to be in dance, gymnastics and soccer growing up, but now I just stick to running. I've been running since middle school, but only seriously got involved with the sport since the start of high school.
Do you have any nicknames?
I usually just go by Haley, but my family always call me Halst (don't know how that started), and some of my old coaches called me Wolfey.
What song/band is most likely to be playing on your phone?
I love classical music, 70s and 80s, opera, and soft surf rock. I have a wide mix of composers and artists that I love including: Franz Liszt, Mendelssohn, Electric Light Orchestra, Allah-Las, Dr. Dog, Jackie Evancho, and many more.
The Beavers cross country team remains idle for the coming weeks as they train in preparation for the Nuttycombe Invitational on Sept. 28.
