Get to Know Erin Harvey
November 20, 2018 | Women's Swimming
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Welcome to the sixth installment of our series introducing the newcomers to the 2018-19 swim team. This week we're featuring Erin Harvey. She is a freshman hailing from Bellevue, Wash. specializing in the freestyle.
What are you looking forward to most about swimming at Oregon State?
I am really looking forward to training hard and working with Jen, Michael, Madi, and Noemie to become the fastest swimmer I can be, alongside some amazing teammates. I am also excited to race some of the nations most competitive collegiate programs.
How do you spend your time outside of the pool?
Outside of swimming, I really like taking time to relax and spend time with friends and family. I enjoy going to the lake, watching movies, listening to music, taking my dogs on walks and eating food!
What is your first memory of being in the pool?
My first memory of swimming is when I was really young, probably around four or five. I was taking lessons at the Bellevue Aquatic Center in Bellevue, Wash., with my mom!
Who is your role model?
In terms of swimming, my role model would be Michael Phelps. It may be a cliché answer, but if you read about the training and hardships he put his body through, it's incredible and motivates me to push myself even harder. Outside the pool, I would say that my mom and dad are my role models. Maybe another cliché answer, but they have always supported me and my career. Beyond that, they have always worked incredibly hard to provide for me and my siblings. When I am older, I hope to be the same way for my kids.
Do you have any pre-meet superstitions?
I don't really have any pre-meet superstitions, but before every race, I splash myself with water five times. It's a way to get my body used to the water and its temperature before actually diving in to swim.
What other sports did you play growing up?
There are a lot! I tried out soccer, basketball, softball, gymnastics, volleyball, cross country and even dance before I narrowed it down to swimming. Turns out, I am not coordinated enough for land sports.
What are you planning on studying?
As of right now, I am unsure of exactly what I want to major in. However, I do know that I want to get my teaching license while at OSU.
What is one hidden talent you have?
I am sad to say that I don't really have any hidden talents.
What song/band is most likely to be playing on your phone?
I like a lot of different types of music, so it could someone like Odesza (EDM), Coldplay, Cardi B, or the Today's Top Hits playlists on Spotify.
What is your favorite TV show?
My favorite show would definitely be 'The Office'. It's a hilarious show, and it also has some meaningful life lessons.
What actress would play you in a movie?
I would be honored for Zendaya to play me in a movie. I think she's a very relatable person. She is also very funny and a great actress.
Oregon State will be back in action at the USA Winter Nationals and Husky Invitational late this week.
