October 04, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon State men's soccer team created a number of scoring chances, but a 60th-minute goal lifted San Diego State to a 1-0 win Thursday afternoon in San Diego, Calif.
Â
The Beavers recorded seven shots in the match, and came close to getting on the end of crosses on numerous occasions. With the defeat, OSU falls to 5-3-2 on the season, and 1-1-0 in Pac-12 play.
Â
Oregon State's first scoring chance of the match came in the 12th minute, when Joel Walker was denied by the San Diego State goalkeeper. The Beavers created another opportunity 15 minutes later, when Gloire Amanda got on the end of a set piece, but his header was blocked.
Â
Don Tchilao nearly picked out Amanda in the box in the 35th minute, but his cross was turned away for a corner kick.
Â
Goalkeeper Adrian Fernandez made a diving save early in the second half to keep the match scoreless. Sofiane Djeffal followed that up with a curling free kick two minutes later, but the effort deflected away from net. Tchilao very nearly put the Beavers ahead in the 57th, but his shot from a tight angle rolled just wide.
Â
The Aztecs took the lead in the 60th minute on a strike from the left side of the box. OSU pushed forward looking to answer, whipping a pair of crosses across the face of goal in the 63rd. Tchilao played another pass across the six-yard box in the 68th minute, which narrowly missed the foot of Djeffal from point-blank range.
Â
Amanda nearly put the sides on level terms from close range in the 78th, but his shot was saved near the post. Diaz had a chance inside the box in the final minute of the match, but it flew over the bar and out of play, as San Diego State locked down the win.
Â
Djeffal and Joe Hafferty led Oregon State with two shots apiece in the contest. Fernandez came up with four saves in the match.
Â
The Beavers will remain on the road Sunday, when they take on UCLA at noon. That match will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
