Beavers Head South for Pac-12 Championships
October 24, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State Cross country team has trained all year in preparation for the postseason and this weekend the Beavers get their shot to continue a historic season at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships this Friday.
Hosted by Stanford, the 2018 iteration of the championship event will be held at the Stanford Golf Course. This is the 14th time the venue has played host to the women's race. The women's 6,000-meter race will begin at 11:10 a.m. PT, you can follow the action via the live results here.
For the second consecutive year, the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships will be broadcast live on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. PT. Both the men's and women's races will air live nationally on Pac-12 Network as well as across all six Pac-12 regional channels. You can view the live stream online on the Pac-12 Now app and at Pac-12.com.
The Beavers are coming off a week break following a successful trip down to California two weeks ago. OSU claimed the top spot for the second time this season winning the Bronco Invitational with 48 team points; 124 points better than second place finishers Rice and Utep.
"The way the NCAA has set up the seasons now, it helped us coming off Bronco and allowed us to get home early and get into a productive 10 days of practice," began head coach Louie Quintana. "The girls are feeling great and we are excited to get involved in the competition this weekend."
Oregon State is traveling 10 student-athletes to Stanford this week: Juliana Mount, Mari Friedman, Haley Wolf, Lexi Reed, Audrey Lookner, Grace Featherstonhaugh, Brigette Takeuchi, Rebecca Ledsham, Alyssa Foote and Batya Beard.
Lone senior Mount looks to anchor a young Beavers squad and improve upon an 11th place finish at the conference meet a season ago. She earned an All-Region designation last season, and has been OSU's top finisher in every race she has run this season.
"JJ [Mount] is getting better and better every week, and hopefully she can provide that low stick for us that we need," said Quintana. "Our freshman are really starting to come along, and we have three true freshman that, if they keep their wits about them during the race, might be three of the best in the Pac-12 Conference this year."
Freshman Haley Wolf has looked good all season long cracking the top 10 at the Sundodger Invitational and the Bronco Invitational. Freshman Mari Friedman has come on strong the back half of the season earning a sixth place finish her last time out at the Bronco Invitational.
Mount, Friedman, Wolf and Audrey Lookner all sit in the top 10 in Oregon State history for a 6,000-meter race. Mount holds the top spot with a time of 19:36.
Lexi Reed brings experience to an already deep group of student-athletes. Reed opened the year with an individual win at the Viking Rust Buster that propelled the Beavers to their first team title of the 2018 season.
"Our group understands the game plan and they know what they need to get done," said Quintana. "We want to continue to climb the ranks, the school's best finish in the Pac-12 is 8th, and I believe we have a good shot to be better than that."
