Anderson, Letrari and Neal post event wins in dual
MOSCOW, Idaho – The Oregon State University swimming program got five individual event wins from three swimmers on Saturday against Idaho at the UI Swim Center, but the Beavers fell short as the Vandals took the dual at 174-86.
"There was a lot of fight today," said head coach Jennifer Buffin. "We didn't give up on opportunities and we took the wins while fighting for the second and third place finishes.
"I'm looking forward to our final home meet honoring the seniors in front of our home crowd."
Sophomore Felicia Anderson (Portland, Ore.) took the top spot on the podium in the 100 and 200 back, junior transfer Arianna Letrari (Bolzano, Italy) bested all others in the 200 free and 100 fly, and freshman Riley Neal (Hillsboro, Ore.) recorded her first collegiate event win in the 500 free.
Anderson took a comfortable lead into the final leg of the 100 back and clocked a time of 56.94, nearly three seconds faster than the competition. She added a time of 2:04.67 in the 200 back to take her second top spot on the podium, which was a full five seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Letrari touched the wall in 1:54.23 in the 200 free for her first event win of the day and added a time of 57.24 in the 100 fly to close her individual events of the dual. She also anchored the 200 free relay that finished second in the event at 1:39.68 with her fastest split time of the year.
Neal was the final Beaver swimmer to take an event win as her time of 5:14.55 in the 500 free narrowly edged out the second-place finisher by just over a quarter-second.
Aside from the individual wins, senior captain Noemie Midrez (Verviers, Liège, Belgium) improved her time in the 100 free, clocking in at 54.64 in the dual against Idaho to finish in third and bested her time in the dual against Washington State by a half-second.
???????Midrez also lowered her time in the 200 free after shaving off a full second in the Vandal dual at 1:57.56 to finish fifth; she posted a time of 1:58.62 in the dual against the Cougars.
Newcomer Brooke Hofmann posted a second-place finish in the 100 breast at 1:07.87 and finished fourth in the 200 breast at 2:27.54. Hofmann was less than a second behind freshman Fernanda Rodriguez (Portland, Ore.) in the 200 breast, who touched the wall in 2:26.66.
The Beavers will return home next week to take on Utah for Senior Day, starting at 10 a.m. PT on Feb. 3. The Pac-12 dual will also be Oregon State's DAM Cancer meet as they honor alumni Marcia Brown, née Matthews.
