Oregon State prepped for 18-game schedule
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's soccer team was eager to return to the pitch today on Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium for the official start of the 2017 season.
"It's awesome to see the new composition of players since every year is a completely different team," said head coach Steve Simmons. "I'm incredibly excited about this squad since they are strong, both mentally and physically."
The 29-man roster features 17 returning from last year's squad, as well as 12 newcomers signing on for the fall. Included among the returners are the top two point-getters from the 2016 season in seniors Jordan Jones (Pacific Grove, Calif.) and Timmy Mueller (Post Falls, Idaho). The duo combined for 26 points during their junior season as Jones posted six goals and a pair of assists, while Mueller put away five goals and a pair of his own helpers.
Junior Don Tchilao (Chandler, Ariz.) will round out the trio on the front line as he made an appearance in 18 contests for Oregon State last season, totaling 1,210 minutes across 17 starts and finishing with six points behind three goals.
In the midfield, junior Hassani Dotson (Federal Way, Wash.) will direct traffic, while redshirt-senior Jalen Markey (Seattle, Wash.) returns to anchor the back line as the lone Beaver to start all 18 contests in the previous year. The duo combined for over 3,000 minutes on the pitch in 2016.
Redshirt-junior Ryan Vincent (Newberg, Ore.) is back as the only keeper with time between the pipes in 2016, starting the final six contests and amassing a 3-3 record while making 25 saves and averaging 1.77 goals against with two clean sheets.
In total, the 2017 team will feature 14 upperclassmen between six seniors and eight juniors.
"This preseason, for us, is ensuring we're on the same page on how to proceed," added Coach Simmons, "because this team is very hungry and very aggressive and we want to be calculated on how we move forward."
The Beavers' current campaign includes an 18-game schedule with the annual Hensor/Zaher Classic slated for August 25 and 28. OSU will host Fairfield to begin the season and wrap up the weekend with a match against UNLV live on the Pac-12 Networks.
Oregon State's first road trip will be to Spokane, Wash., for a tournament hosted by Gonzaga. The Beavers will face American University and UC Riverside on September 1 and 3, respectively.
OSU's first taste of Pac-12 action will be on the road in Seattle against No. 11 Washington on October 1, before returning home to host No. 21 UCLA on October 5.
The 10-game conference slate will close on November 9 when the Huskies pay a visit to Lorenz Field. OSU closed the 2016 season on a high note after taking a win in two of its final three games, including a 3-2 overtime decision over then-No. 21 San Diego State off a bicycle kick from Jones in the 98th minute, and ended the year with a thrilling 1-0 victory against then-No. 14 Washington on the road.
The first exhibition contest will take place this Saturday, August 12, when Oregon State visits Bend, Ore., to face Southern Oregon University on a neutral site. Kick off time is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
