Beavers Finish Fifth, Murphy Tied For Seventh
March 28, 2017 | Men's Golf
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon State men's golf team finished in fifth place and Kevin Murphy notched his eighth career top-10 finish at the 28th Annual Duck Invitational on Tuesday.
Â
The Beavers concluded the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 20-over 288-285-299--872 at the par-71, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club to finish fifth in the 15-team field.
Â
Oregon State has now recorded top-5 finishes in five of their eight tournaments this season -- second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, third at the Bandon Dunes Championship, and fifth at The Jackrabbit, Duck Commander Intercollegiate and Duck Invitational.
Â
"It was a disappointing day for us," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We started out well and then had a couple of hiccups in the middle of the round and seemed to begin to press a bit.
Â
"The course was definitely playing tougher today with a bit of wind and tucked hole locations. But it seemed after we were a few over in the middle of the round we tried to make things happen instead of just let them happen."
Â
Murphy, a senior from Rogue River, Ore., parlayed a 5-under 66 in the second round to finish in a tie for seventh place with an even-par 74-66-73--213. It's his second top-10 finish this season and the eighth in his four-year Oregon State career.
Â
He finished in a tie for sixth at The Jackrabbit in the first tournament of the season. His best career finish is second place at last year's El Macero Classic in California.
Â
"I'm very excited for Kevin," Reehoorn said. "His game has been really close. It was nice to see the work he is putting in pay off."
Â
Senior Calum Hill and junior Jonas Liebich both tied for 29th place with an 8-over 221, as Hill posted scores of 74-70-77 and Liebich finished with 70-73-78.
Â
Sophomore Trevor Yu was a stroke back with a 9-over 72-76-74--222 to finish in a tie for 37th place and freshman Shawn Lu carded a 12-over 72-78-75--225 for a tie for 48th.
Â
Oregon State's Kyosuke Hara and Tom Kerkvliet competed as individuals. Hara recorded a tie for 29th place with an 8-over 74-71-76--221 and Kerkvliet played well the final two rounds to move into a tie for 56th with a 13-over 83-73-70--226.
Â
Oregon won the team title with an 8-under 844 and Sulman Raza of Oregon claimed medalist honors with an 8-under 205.
Â
The Beavers have one day off before competing at The Goodwin in Stanford, Calif., from Thursday through Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course.
Â
"We've made good progress from the Bandon Dunes Championship to the past couple of days and now it's time to continue doing it on Thursday at Stanford," Reehoorn said.
