Beavers overpower Broncos, keep Border Axe
February 03, 2017 | Wrestling
BOISE, Idaho – The Oregon State wrestling team got pins from redshirt sophomore Jack Hathaway (141), redshirt junior Cody Crawford (hwt.), redshirt sophomore Kegan Calkins (125), and kept possession of the Border Axe with a 31-13 victory over Boise State on Friday in a Pac-12 match at Taco Bell Arena.
The Beavers (4-6, 2-0 Pac-12) won their second conference meet of the week and handled the Broncos (1-7, 0-2) for the fifth consecutive time to maintain control of the rivalry. OSU edged Stanford 18-15 this past Monday in its Pac-12 opener.
OSU jumped to a quick 13-0 lead on a major decision by senior Joey Palmer (133), Hathaway's pin and senior Joey Delgado's 7-3 victory at 149. Boise State battled back, however, and won three straight bout to tie the dual 13-13 heading into 184 pounds.
That's where the Beavers took over. Redshirt sophomore Seth McLeod, a midseason transfer from Boise State, improved to 2-0 in varsity matches with a crucial 5-2 win to send the Beavers back on top 16-13.
Redshirt sophomore Corey Griego (197) also prevailed 5-2 for a 19-13 advantage and Crawford clinched the dual with a pin in 1:43. Calkins then erased an early 4-0 deficit with his fall to end the night on a high note.
The Beavers host No. 21 Arizona State (7-4, 0-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Gill Coliseum.
