STANFORD, Calif. – Joey Palmer (133) and Corey Griego (197) captured individual titles and five Oregon State wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships on Sunday at the Pacific-12 Conference Championships at Stanford.
Arizona State snapped OSU's streak of five consecutive championships, however. OSU scored 91.5 points and placed fourth behind the Sun Devils (127), Stanford (122.5) and CSU Bakersfield (92).
It was the first title since 2006 for the Sun Devils. The Beavers (7) and Boise State (3) had combined to capture the previous 10 team titles.
Jack Hathaway (141) and Cody Crawford (hwt.) placed second and Joey Delgado (149) took third. They joined Palmer and Griego as automatic qualifiers to the NCAA Championships, set for March 16-18 at St. Louis.
Palmer lost in the 133 finals in 2016 but earned his first Pac-12 title by defeating Connor Schram of Stanford 5-4. It was his second win of the season over Schram, the 2016 champ at 125 pounds, and he improved to 24-5 overall and 10-1 at 133 pounds.
They were tied 4-4 after three periods and sudden victory. Palmer rode Schram the entire 30 seconds of the first overtime; Schram started the second round in neutral, giving Palmer an escape point, and Palmer fended off all takedown attempts for the win.
Palmer will make his third trip to NCAAs. He was 2-2 in 2016 and 0-2 in 2014. He was a four-time top-3 placer at Pac-12s.
Griego (24-8) edged Stanford's Josh Marchok 5-3 for his first Pac-12 title. They were tied 2-2 heading into the third period, but Griego got an escape and a subsequent takedown to win his ninth match in a row.
It's the second NCAA berth for Griego, who is 12-1 in his last 13 matches and 16-2 in his last 18. He was 1-2 at 184 pounds at the 2016 NCAAs.
Hathaway (17-11) fell 12-1 to Stanford's Joey McKenna, the third-place finisher at the 2016 NCAAs as a freshman, in the 141 final. He will make his second NCAA appearance; he went 0-2 at 133 pounds in 2015 as a redshirt freshman.
Crawford (22-7) fell 4-2 to Tanner Hall of ASU in the second sudden victory period in the heavyweight final. The opponents traded escapes in regulation and no one scored until Hall got the decisive takedown in extra time. It will be the second NCAA appearance for Crawford; he was 2-2 at 197 pounds in 2015.
Delgado (18-10) defeated Joshy Cortez of Cal Poly 3-1 in the third-place match to earn his third trip to NCAAs. He was 1-2 at 149 last year and 0-2 at 141 in 2014.
Redshirt sophomore Rodney Williams (165) and freshman Bob Coleman (174) each placed fifth.
