Beavers’ Win Streak Snapped by Bruins
November 22, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State's five match win streak came to an end Wednesday afternoon when No. 19 UCLA defeated the Beavers in three sets. For OSU it was the second five-match conference win streak of the season after not having a single streak of the sort since 1990.
Â
The Beavers fell to 21-10 overall, and 11-8 in Pac-12 play, while the Bruins raised their record to 18-10 11-8. Set scores were 31-29, 25-17, and 25-19.
Â
"We were outclassed by a more savvy volleyball team," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We struggled to handle their left-side attack. We scrambled well defensively but that put us out of system and resulted in a lot of free balls for them."
Â
The opening set was a wild one with 10 ties and five lead changes. Oregon State led early by as much as four points at 10-6 behind a varied offense that included a pair of kills each by Maddie Goings and Maddy Gravley. UCLA fought back to tie the score at 15-15. The Bruins moved past the Beavers and held the lead at 19-18 before a series of sideouts left the score tied at 21-21. UCLA battled its way to a 24-21 advantage to serve for the set. A kill by Mary-Kate Marshall followed by an ace from Kory Cheshire and a block by Gravley and Kylee McLaughlin tied the score at 24-24. Each team had set point three times, but ultimately the Bruins' Reily Buechler recorded back-to-back kills to steal the set, 31-29.
Â
The momentum swung to the Bruins at the end of the first set and the Beavers were never able to regain an advantage in the match.
Â
Mary-Kate Marshall registered a team-leading 11 kills and Maddie Goings added 10 to lead the Beavers' offense. Middle blockers Kory Cheshire, Serena Bruin and Maddy Gravley combined for a dozen kills on an efficient .333 hitting percentage. Kylee McLaughlin and Grace Massey led the Beavers in the back row with 16 and 15 digs respectively.
Â
"We look forward to playing Oregon on Friday and will look to get it turned around," Barnard said.
Â
Game Notes: Mary-Kate Marshall led the Beavers with a team-high 11 kills. She has led the team in kills in 27 out of 31 matches in 2017 … Maddie Goings recorded her fourth straight, and eighth overall, double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs … four OSU players tallied double-digits in digs including Kylee McLaughlin (16), Grace Massey (15), Goings (11) and Kayla Ellis (10).
Â
Next Up: The Beavers finish the regular season when they host No. 24 Oregon for the Civil War, presented by Pacific Source Health Plans, Spirit Mountain Casino, Safeway-Albertsons and your local Toyota dealers, Friday at 7 p.m. The match is Oregon State's Senior Night, in which Mary-Kate Marshall, Lanesha Reagan and McKenna Hollingsworth will be honored.
