Trio combine for seven individual wins as Beavers drop dual meet to Redhawks
SEATTLE – The Oregon State University swimming program had several strong performances from a trio of Beavers this afternoon in a dual meet against Seattle University at the Connolly Complex.
OSU dropped a 143-116 decision to the Redhawks at the event.
"This is a great learning moment for our young team," said head coach Jennifer Buffin. "We had a great week of training after last weekend and we will be focused on resting and getting ready to race at the Husky Invite in a few weeks."
Junior Arianna Letrari (Bolzano, Italy), sophomore Felicia Anderson (Portland, Ore.) and freshman Fernanda Rodriguez (Portland, Ore.) paced the Beavers at the dual as the trio combined for seven individual wins and teamed up with senior captain Noemie Midrez (Verviers, Liège, Belgium) for the top spot in the 400 medley relay.
OSU posted a time of 3:57.32 in the opening medley relay to set the tone for the remainder of the meet.
Letrari took home the top spot on the podium in all three of her individual events on the afternoon. The Bolzano, Italy, native touched the wall with a time of 57.02 in the 100 fly, besting the next fastest swimmer by less than a quarter-second in the event.
Letrari added a time of 2:04.86 in the 200 fly, nearly five seconds faster than the competition, and posted a time of 2:09.85 in the 200 IM for her final first-place finish. The 200 IM time came as a season-best for Letrari as she was almost three seconds faster than the rest.
Anderson took home first place finishes in both the 100 and 200 back to help lead the Beavers. Her time of 56.75 in the 100 back was nearly five seconds faster than the second-place finisher, while her time of 2:04.50 in the 200 back bested the rest of the competition by almost nine seconds.
Rodriguez initially stepped up in the 400 medley relay to help Oregon State, but shined as the lone Beaver swimmer competing in both breaststroke events.
The Portland, Ore., native touched the wall in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.29, edging the second-place finisher from the Redhawks by less than a half-second for the top spot.
Rodriguez added a time of 2:26.49 in the 200 breast to finish in first by just over a second faster than the next swimmer.
Two season-bests were set in the 500 free for OSU. Sophomore Merritt Allen (Bend, Ore.) finished second with a time of 5:18.18 in the event for a new fast time in 2017-18 while missing out on the leader by less than two seconds.
Junior Megan Lam (Portland, Ore.) also touched the wall in the 500 free for a season-best time of 5:23.49 to finish third.
The Beavers are off for the next few weeks and will return to the pool on Friday, December 1, for the first day of the 2017 Husky Invite.
