Tchilao buries first goal of the season but Oregon State downed by Washington to open conference play

SEATTLE – Junior Don Tchilao (Chandler, Ariz.) took a thrown-in from the midfield early in the second half and sprinted down the pitch for his first score of the season for the Oregon State University men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium.

His strike wasn't enough, however, as No. 17 Washington got a brace from Joey Parish to claim the 2-1 win in the Pac-12 opener for both schools.

"I feel for the guys right now," said head coach Steve Simmons. "I thought they put in a good shift at a very tough venue to play.

We did enough to get more out of the game. We'll regroup and get ready for UCLA."

The Beavers (3-6-0, 0-1-0 Pac-12) used a stout defense in the first half to keep the Huskies (8-2-0, 1-0-0 Pac-12) at bay, despite 10 corners from the hosts, and appeared to have the momentum after Tchilao's goal only 23 seconds into the second stanza.

A throw-in from sophomore Loke Strenov (Hørsholm, Denmark) found Tchilao on UW's half of the midfield in the opening portion of the frame. The junior took the ball down the right flank and fired a shot past Saif Kerawala from six yards out for the 1-0 OSU advantage.

Washington responded in time, first after Parish took a cross from Handwalla Bwana in the 57th minute and headed a shot past freshman Gage Rogers (Gilbert, Ariz.), who got his second start of the year in the net for the Beavers.

Parish added his second goal of the match in the 64th minute after he tapped in the finish from Corban Anderson in front of the goal for his third marker of the season and a 2-1 UW lead heading into the final 26 minutes of the game.

Both goals came after redshirt-sophomore Eric Diaz (Woodburn, Ore.) made a great stop in front of the net in the 54th minute after Rogers was caught out of position to preserve the visitor's lead. OSU had two team saves on the day with the second coming from senior Sam Tweeton (Fort Collins, Colo.) in the 67th minute.

Oregon State threw numbers forward in the final 20 minutes and had a handful of opportunities to net the equalizer, including a pair of brilliant bicycle kicks from senior Jordan Jones (Pacific Grove, Calif.) that missed the target by inches and instead hit off the frame of the goal.

Jones' first attempt in the 82nd minute took a bounce and ricocheted off the post as Tchilao's follow up shot got blocked by Washington, while the second attempt in the 88th minute went straight for the crossbar and caromed off the top, keeping OSU on the backside of a 2-1 road decision.

The Beavers will return home later this week on Thursday, October 5, to take on UCLA at Paul Lorenz Field. The game will broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks with kickoff set for 4 p.m. PT.
