CORVALLIS, Ore. – Junior Kristiane Width placed fourth and the Oregon State cross country team split duals with Portland and Portland State on Saturday at the John Frank Invitational at Avery Park.
The meet was scored as a double dual. The Beavers fell 21-34 to the Pilots, who were ranked No. 6 in the first USTFCCCA West Region poll, and swept Portland State 15-42 to go 1-1 on the morning.
Width finished the three-mile course in 17:01, less than 10 seconds behind winner Parkes Kendrick of Portland (16:52). She led an OSU contingent that placed all five team scorers in the top 10.
"I am happy with my position," said Width, who ran with the lead pack the entire race before falling off just a bit in the final 400 meters. "The end could have gone a little bit better but [I ran] better than I thought I would.
Width was OSU's No. 2 runner for much of the 2015 season before missing the final two meets with an injury.
"I'm just really happy to be back. That was definitely heartbreaking, getting injured right before Pac-12s and regionals," she said "But I came back and picked it up in track season," and PRed in the 1500 meters in every meet she entered.
"Now I'm finding my safe space, running less mileage and concentrating on cross training so I will still get the same work as the girls who are running more mileage," and remain healthy for the entire season.
"Cross country is very new to me; I didn't start until I was a freshman at Oregon State. I'm learning to embrace the distance. It's a very different race but its fun to run."
Redshirt sophomore Sam McKinnon placed sixth in 17:27 in her first race since the May, 2015, NCAA West Regional meet. OSU's No. 2 cross country runner in 2014 as a freshman, she sat out cross country and track in 2015-16 while recovering from an off-season knee injury.
Freshman Lexi Reed was seventh in 17:30 in her collegiate debut. Seniors Samantha Lewis (17:43) and Morgan Anderson (17:44) went 8-9 to complete OSU's team scoring; junior Kala Kopecek was 19th in 18:45.
"Our depth is incredible," Width said. "Lexi had an incredible race. I've been working out with her was last year and she is a phenomenal athlete.
"She's very easy to work with, and listens to the older girls. That's very respectful and I'm am excited to see what she is going to accomplish. She got out to an incredible start."
Several of OSU's more experienced runners (Juliana Mount, Emily Weber, Monica Anderson, and Nicole Goecke) did not compete. Sophomore Kaely Gordon (19:16) and freshman Emily Bacon (18:51) ran unattached.
"Portland is ranked very high in our region and we have a ton of respect for their program," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. "They didn't run a few of their top people today and we certainly didn't race quite of few of ours, but the ones who did run competed hard.
"Everything is about what you're working towards," the conference and regional meets in October and November. "Today was a great start for us, it showed the potential we have."
The Beavers return to action on Sept. 16Â at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon at the Springfield Country Club.
