Oregon State nets 1-1 tie at San Diego State
San Diego, Calif. – Sophomore midfielder Hassani Dotson scored a late equalizer to help the Oregon State men's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw at No. 19 San Diego State in its Pac-12 opener Thursday evening.
"I thought the guys responded very well tonight," said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. "To outshoot a ranked Pac-12 team on the road shows the ambition this group has. While I know they're disappointed not to get a win, their game application tonight was tremendous."
Dotson found the net in the 83rd minute, firing a shot into the left side of the goal from 25 yards out. Freshman Eric Diaz we credited with an assist on the play.
As a team, the Beavers (4-3-2, 0-0-1 Pac-12) held a 20-10 edge in shots in the match, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Oregon State got out on the front-foot early on, creating chances with crosses from the wing in the first seven minutes. San Diego State would respond with a shot in the ninth minute, but junior goalkeeper Nolan Wirth came up with a nice save to keep the match scoreless.
Sophomore Don Tchilao took aim with a header in the 14th minute, but his effort was stopped by the Aztec goalie. Junior Jordan Jones followed that up with a scramble in the box in the 23rd minute, but his effort was blocked.
It looked like San Diego State might find have a chance against the run of play late in the first half, but junior defender Sam Tweeton came up with a nice tackle to end the threat. The teams would head to the break scoreless, with the Beavers leading the shot count 6-4.
Oregon State's first scoring chance of the second half came in the 55th minute, when Jones took the ball at the top of the box, but the SDSU defense was able to clear the ball away.
San Diego State found the net in the 67th minute on a header from Matt Callahan to jump in front.
Oregon State very nearly leveled the score in the 75th minute, as junior Timmy Mueller launched a rocket that was just wide.
Dotson proceeded to even things up with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. Tchilao and Jones had chances in the box late in the opening 90, but neither one hit home, and the game headed to extra time.
Mueller very nearly ended the match less than a minute into the first overtime period, but his header looped over the crossbar. Not long after that, the Aztecs were reduced to 10 men due to a red card. A scramble in the box followed in the 98th minute, but the SDSU defense was able to clear the danger.
Both teams battled through the second overtime period, but neither side was able to secure the victory, as the match ended in a tie.
Senior midfielder Devonte Small made his regular-season debut in the 34th minute, after missing the early part of the season due to injury.
The Beavers will return to action Sunday, when they take on UCLA in a match that will air on Pac-12 Oregon and Pac-12 Los Angeles.
