Beavers To Open 2016-17 Season In Scotland
August 31, 2016 | Men's Golf
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's golf team will travel to Scotland next week for pre-season practice heading into their 2016-17 campaign.
"The NCAA has limited some of the restrictions in terms of practice," head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "You used to only be able to practice within your state boundaries. In the last three or four years they've changed that to where you can practice anywhere. We could go all over the world and practice as long as it's within your season.
"Because we are a quarter school and don't start school until September 21, we can start practice on September 7. We have two weeks where we can pretty much do whatever we want. A semester school wouldn't be able to do this."
The Beavers will play seven different golf courses, beginning with Gullane Golf Club No. 2 on Thursday, Sept. 8 and ending with Muirfield Golf Club on Thursday, Sept. 15. The travel party will spend Saturday, Sept. 10 touring Edinburgh.
September 7 -- Depart Portland for Scotland
September 8 -- Gullane Golf Club No. 2
September 9 -- North Berwick Golf Links
September 11 -- Kingsbarns Golf Club (vs. Stanford)
September 12 -- Gullane Golf Club No. 1
September 13 -- North Berwick Golf Links
September 14 -- Renaissance Golf Club
September 15 -- Muirfield Golf Club
September 16 -- Depart Scotland for Portland
Senior Calum Hill is a native of North Berwick, Scotland, and his family helped set up the trip.
"Lots of schools take these trips and they travel all over to places," Reehoorn said. "We actually get to go to the home of one of our players. I think it will be real cool."
The Stanford men's golf team will be in Scotland at the same time, so Oregon State and the Cardinal will compete against each other on Sunday, Sept. 11.
"We'll have the chance to play against Stanford at Kingsbarns, which will be a way for me to kind of see our guys in the heat of the battle," Reehoorn said. "We'll make it a format that won't count in the rankings. But any time you get the chance to go against one of your Pac-12 opponents, you're going to want to play your best and it'll be a way for us to see our three freshmen under the heat of the gun right away. It will also help us prepare for that first tournament of the year."
It will also be an opportunity for three freshmen -- Kyosuke Hara, Shawn Lu and Diego San Pedro -- to meet the returners on the team.
"We have three new freshmen so this will be a great way for them to kind of get thrown in the fire right away and get to know the guys," Reehoorn said. "There's no better way to get to know the guys than going away off campus, not having anybody else around and just spend time with basically the 11 of us; the nine student-athletes and two coaches."
Reehoorn expects the trip to not only be a team bonding experience, but also help their games heading into the 2016-17 season.
"When I was a senior in college, I played in the British Amateur and it was one of the coolest experiences of my life," he said. "It helped me to play pretty well my senior year. I think because it made me look at golf a different way. I think it will be a cool experience that way and allow them to appreciate things and understand how to play golf a different way that might pave the way for us this season. It should help develop their skills."
