Beavers tie Pilots 2-2 on Chimento's late goal
August 19, 2016 | Men's Soccer
The Oregon State men's soccer team scored late to forge a 2-2 overtime draw with Portland at Lorenz Field on Friday night in its exhibition finale.
Sophomore Davis Chimento, an Oral Roberts transfer from Sherwood, erased a 2-1 deficit by following up a deflected shot with a goal at 1:13.52. He was assisted by junior Jesse Garcia, an Akron transfer, and freshman AJ Hurtado.
"I thought we played a pretty good game today," said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. "The guys looked comfortable on the ball, we just need to be a little more ruthless in the attacking third. We need to be patient, play wide and create a high tempo."
Chimento's goal negated a penalty kick by Portland's Erik Edwardson at 1:00.11 that gave the Pilots a short-lived 2-1 edge.Â
Regulation ended 1-1. There was no golden goal; the teams played the full 30-minute overtime to get as much action as possible for as many players as possible in each side's second preseason game.
Twenty-four Beavers played at least 30 minutes; 29 Pilots saw at least 10 minutes of action. OSU outshot the Pilots 13-11; Portland had a 6-4 edge in corners and each team had 18 fouls.
Portland struck quickly and took a 1-0 lead at 7:16 when Malcolm Dixon redirected a cross past OSU keeper Nolan Wirth to finish a three-way play with Jackson Jellah and Eddie Sanchez. Otherwise the first half was evenly played; OSU outshot the Pilots 5-3 and each team had one save and one corner kick.
The Beavers drew level at 75:51 when defender Jalen Markey headed home CJ Brill's inswinging corner kick from the right side. Markley, Chimento and junior Timmy Mueller led OSU with two shots apiece.
The Beavers open the regular season against DePaul on Aug. 26 in the annual Hensor-Zaher Memorial Tournament at Lorenz Field. Their other tourney game is with Wright State at 3 p.m. on Aug. 28. Admission is free.
