May 15, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
SEATTLE, Wash. – Sophomore McKenzie Byrd set a school record and placed fifth in the javelin on Saturday to lead the Oregon State track & field team on Day 1 of the Pacific-12 Conference championships at Husky Track.
The Beavers are in 10th place with four points heading into the second day of competition, which starts at 9 a.m. with the hammer throw. They are guaranteed to score at least one point in three events and will pass last year's total of six points.
Byrd threw 144-3 to break her former school mark of 143-0.75, set at the Willamette Invitational on March 26, by more than 15 inches. Kindel Bailey just missed placing, as she took 10th in 131-10.
The 400 relay foursome of sophomores Jasmin McKenzie, Kerissa D'Arpino, Venessa D'Arpino and junior Devin Collins ran 46.74 and advanced to the finals as the No. 6 seed with the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Collins placed eighth in the 100 hurdles preliminaries in 14.09 and eighth in the 400 hurdles prelims in 1.00.50 to advance to Sunday's finals in both events. Kerissa D'Arpino ran 1:01.81 in the 400 prelims, took 12th and did not advance.
Junior Morgan Anderson placed fourth in her 1500 meter heat in 4:25.44. She led the four Beavers in the event, but none advanced to the finals.
Senior Sara Almen and junior Allison Jackson each cleared 5-5.25 in the high jump. Almen placed ninth, Jackson 11th. McKenzie placed 17th in the long jump in 18-3.75. Sophomore Samantha Lewis was 13th in the 10K in 36:05.25, the fifth-best time in school history.
The Beavers have set 15 school records and have posted 57 all-time top-10 times or marks since starting the outdoor campaign at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Invitational on March 19.
