SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Calum Hill finished in 25th place and Tyler Carlson fired a 1-over 72 for the second straight day to lead the Oregon State men's golf team at the 57th Annual Pac-12 Championship, which concluded Sunday.
The Beavers shot a 65-over 371-365-372-377--1,485 at the par-71, 7,209-yard Country Club to finish the three-day, 72-hole tournament in 11th place.
Stanford took the team title in dominating fashion, shooting an 18-under 1,402 to win by 29 strokes over California, which finished second with an 11-over 1,431. Jon Rahm of Arizona State claimed medalist honors with a 12-under 272.
“With the course right against the mountains and canyons, the wind was swirling every direction and it made it very difficult to judge distances,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “As one can tell by the scores for the entire field, the length of the rough, speed of the greens and wind made the course very difficult.
“Obviously it is a disappointing finish for us as we were playing for a chance to advance to NCAA postseason. We didn't get it done this week. Now we will take some time to reflect on what needs to happen for us to continue building in the right direction and hit the road for some recruiting.”
Hill, in his first year at Oregon State after transferring from the University of Louisiana-Monroe, was consistent throughout the tournament. He finished in 25th place with a 6-over 73-70-72-75--290 to post a top-25 finish for the fifth time in his junior campaign.
Carlson, a senior from Clarkston, Wash., was in 70th place after Friday's 36 holes with a 15-over 157. He battled hard the final two rounds, shooting a pair of 1-over 72's, to climb the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 48th place with a 17-over 79-78-72-72--301.
Senior Chris Tedesco, a native of Gig Harbor, Wash., was the Beavers' second-highest finisher, posting an 11-over 74-72-76-73--295, for a tie for 36th place.
“I'm really proud of the way our two seniors (Carlson and Tedesco) competed today,” Reehoorn said. “It was awesome to see them go out playing like they did in really tough conditions.”
Junior Conner Kumpula finished in a tie for 42nd place with a 14-over 73-72-76-77--298, junior Kevin Murphy carded a 21-over 75-73-76-81--305 for a tie for 58th and sophomore Jonas Liebich concluded his first conference championship in a tie for 68th with a 27-over 76-79-76-80--311.
Pac-12 Networks will air coverage of the championships on Sunday, May 8 at 10 a.m. PT. Greg Heister and Kay Cockerill will call the action.
