Beavers have big day at Hayward
April 16, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Junior Devin Collins and sophomore Kerissa D'Arpino set school records on Saturday to highlight Oregon State's performances on the second day of the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field.
Collins broke the 100-meter hurdles record for the third time this spring and won the event with a time of 13.45. She easily eclipsed her former mark of 13.76, set last week at the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State. Teammate Kara Hallock, running unattached, was third in 14.29, matching her No. 6 all-time mark.
D'Arpino took second place in the 100 meters in 11.77 and broke the old school mark of 11.79, set by Rosie Williams in 1988. Her former PR of 11.89 was No. 2 all-time before Saturday.
Collins and D'Arpino then went 1-2 in the 400 hurdles, improving top-10 times in the process. Collins improved her season-best to 1:00.16, D'Arpino to 1:01.37. They rank No. 2 and No. 5 all-time in that event.
“Devin had a brilliant day,” OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. “Running 13.46 is legit, and to come back two hours later to almost break one minute is great. It's a tough double with such a short interval.
“Kerissa was outstanding as well,” as she ran the longer hurdles race less than an hour after her record-setting 100. “It was a big-time effort from both women.
“Overall it was a great two days. We still have a couple areas to tighten up and to get better in but we are eager to do it. For us to finally be able to come to these meets and have a full team is exciting.”
Sara Almen was second in the high jump at 5-5.25; Allison Jackson took third at the same height. Michele Turney was fifth in the triple jump with a season-best 39-9.75; Bethany Imperial improved her outdoor PR by three inches and placed sixth at 38-3.50 and tied teammate Lucinda Howard for the No. 2 all-time outdoor mark.
OSU won three events on the weekend. Collins swept the hurdles on Saturday; on Friday, junior Melissa Ausman captured the discus and broke the 171-foot barrier for the second meet in a row by throwing 171-5.
“Melissa going back-to-back is tremendous,” Sullivan said. “It was great to see her come up with a big throw.”
The Beavers set two school records and had six all-time top-10 times or marks in the two-day event. They have now established 10 school records and posted 32 all-time top-10 times or marks since starting the outdoor campaign at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Invitational on March 19.
The Beavers return to action on Saturday at the Bulldog Invitational at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif., on April 23. Fresno State is the host school; it's a scored meet and OSU will have a full slate of entries.
OSU's lone home competition is the annual High Performance Meet, set for April 29-30 at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
