Track and Field Teams Show Well at Mark Young Invite
April 11, 2016
The Hartford men's and women's track and field teams continued their strong growth throughout the 2016 outdoor season with a solid performance on Saturday at the Mark Young Invite, hosted by Yale. Sara Buckley (5000 meters) and Savannah Brown (triple jump) won their respective events for the women's team.
ÂÂ
"It was a good day for the team to see that we can perform well in less than ideal conditions," head coach Roger Busch said. "Many of our student-athletes are having continued success because of their consistent training. We are getting better every day."
ÂÂ
Buckley was not the only strong Hawk in the 5000. Her time of 18:29.96 led the way, while Ellie Donlon came in third in 19:22.36. Hartford had eight different women run in the 1500, with Julianna Wesley leading the way with a 15th-place finish for a personal best (4:55.11). Seven of the eight (Wesley, Nicole Demars, Carly Schuyler, Sam Nyser, Allie Tedeschi, Kaeli Baker and Courtney Hackman) delivered lifetime bests in the event.
ÂÂ
Brown delivered her third top-five finish in a row in the triple jump, posting a distance of 10.58 on Saturday. Briana Burt continued her strong performance in the hurdles, placing second in the 100 in a personal-best time of 15.55, while Lauren Bossi turned in a sixth-place finish in a time of 17.25. Bossi also finished second in the long jump, placing second with a distance of 4.22 meters
ÂÂ
The Hawks took two of the top six positions in the women's 100 meters, with Aika Aluc finishing fourth in a personal-best 13.66 and Amana Steenburn taking sixth in 13.88. Steenburn also took eighth (28.12) in the 200 meters, with Aluc finishing 10th (28.43) and Riva Scheck taking home 12th (29.24).
ÂÂ
In the women's midrange events, Courtney Dunning turned in a fourth-place finish (1:00.73) in the 400, while Scheck came in 11th (1:05.70). In the 800, Heather Hassett placed 11th (personal-best 2:20.04) and Bossi 21st (2:29.01).
ÂÂ
On the men's side, the Hawks saw three runners place in the top 12 in the 100 meters â€" Alex Paterson (8th, 11.50), Miles Mabry (11th, 12.00) and Errol Hudson (12th, 12.20). In the 200, Hansy Monrose (18th, 24.26), Jose Rodriguez (19th, 24.32), Mabry (20th, 24.47) and Joshua Rudolph (23rd, 24.96) all competed for the Hawks. The 400 saw Monrose post a career-best time (14th, 52.33), with Rodriguez (16th, 54.71) and Rudolph (17th, 54.82) also taking part, while Lawrence Yancey took home 14th (2:03.65) in the 800.
ÂÂ
"Alex's times have been really consistent, and he will look to get better and better as we progress toward conference," Busch said. "Hansy had a solid 200-400 double with his lifetime-best in the 400."
ÂÂ
Chris Helminski (7th, 4:04.64) led six Hawks in the 1500, while Evan Jaworski delivered a personal best to take home ninth (4:08:03) and Rourk Marlow led his section and delivered a 12th place finish (4:11.35) in a personal-best time. Kevin Michalka delivered a sixth-place finish in the 5000 (17:13.17), his college debut in the event.
ÂÂ
"Chris ran a very good 1500 and was only one second from his lifetime best finishing 7th," Busch said. "Evan returned to action after a couple of weeks off with a minor injury finishing 9th after breaking the indoor 1000 record. His time, as well as Rourk's time, both marked lifetime PRs in the 1500.ÂÂ "
ÂÂ
The 400-meter hurdles saw Jacob Black deliver a ninth-place finish (1:00.44), while Robert Pepper (5th, 13.30m) came just short of his season long in the triple jump. In the javelin, Andrew Roschen's distance of 55.55 meters was a season best and placed him second, while John Fairhurst (seventh, 45.94m) and Chris Thorpe (eighth, 40.46) each posted top-eight finishes.
ÂÂ
The Hawks will return to action next weekend, with a trip to the Dartmouth Classic on Saturday, April 16.
