Gary Payton II Earns Pac-12 Honors

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Gary Payton II was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and All-Defensive Team as selected by a vote of the conference coaches, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Payton II is the only repeat honoree in the conference to make the All-Pac-12 First Team and the All-Defensive Team.
The Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year award, which Payton II won last season, will be unveiled tonight, Monday, March 7 by the Pac-12 Networks on Pac-12 Sports Report that airs at 6 p.m.
Payton II, a senior from Seattle, Wash., is the first Oregon State player to make the All-Pac-12 First Team in back-to-back seasons since David Lucas in 2004-2005. The 6-foot-3 guard leads the Beavers in scoring (15.9), rebounding (7.6), assists (5.3) and steals (2.4) and is likely to become the second player in school history to lead the team in all four categories (Lester Conner, 1981-82).
The Beavers now have 33 All-Pac-12 selections since 1979. Steve Johnson, A.C. Green, Charlie Sitton and Gary Payton each earned All-Pac-12 First Team honors three times. Payton II is the first Oregon State player to make the All-Pac-12 First Team in back-to-back seasons since David Lucas in 2004-2005.
Oregon State (18-11, 9-9 Pac-12) opens the Pac-12 Tournament at 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday against Arizona State (15-16, 5-13) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Beavers are the No. 6 seed and the Sun Devils are the No. 11 seed. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
