Shelton Gets U-23 Call Up With USA
March 19, 2016 | Men's Soccer
CHICAGO – Former Oregon State standout Khiry Shelton has earned a call-up with the US Under-23 Men's National Team for its Olympic Qualifying playoff with Colombia. The two-leg playoff will determine the final berth in the 2016 Olympic Games.
The first match of the 2016 Olympic Qualifying playoff will take place on Friday, March 25 at Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla, Colombia, at 2 p.m. PT. The match will air live on FS1.
The return leg will be played on March 29 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas at 6:30 p.m. PT. The decisive match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, following the U.S. MNT's World Cup Qualifying match against Guatemala at 4 p.m. PT.
Shelton competed with the US Under-23 National Team in a pair of friendlies against Brazil in November, starting both matches. He also earned a spot in Team USA's January camp as part of the senior national team.
Shelton, who was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, has gotten his 2016 season off to a strong start as a member of New York City FC. The forward has started all three games this year, recording one goal and one assist.
During his senior season with the Beavers, Shelton earned Pac-12 Player of the Year and All-Far West Region honors. Shelton finished that season with a Pac-12 leading 32 points, good for third on the Oregon State's single-season list, and a new record for an OSU senior. Shelton ended the year with 12 assists, one short of an Oregon State school record, as he helped lead the Beavers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003 and the first NCAA Tournament victory in school history.
