ATLANTA, Ga. – Senior Sammy Harrison of the Oregon State swimming team opened competition at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming Championships with a 32nd-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday from the McAuley Aquatic Center.
Harrison registered her 32nd-place finish among the field of 68 swimmers with a time of 4:43.81, marking the fourth-fastest time in school history. The Henderson, Nev. native now owns five of the top-10 times in the event in school history, with four of those times coming this season. Harrison owns a top time of 4:41.85 this season, and set the program record with a time of 4:39.10 last season.
Her finish in the event was second amongst all Pac-12 swimmers, improving upon a third-place finish in the event at the Pac-12 Championships. The only Pac-12 competitor to edge Harrison on Wednesday was Arizona's Bonnie Brandon (4:43.58).
The 500-yard freestyle is the first of three events Harrison was invited to compete in this weekend. She continues her NCAA Championships campaign with the 200-yard freestyle on Friday at 7 a.m. PT (10 a.m. ET), and wraps up competition with her signature event, the 1,650-yard freestyle, on Saturday. Heats for the 1,650 begin at 12:45 p.m. PT (3:45 p.m. ET), while Harrison's heat, the third heat, will likely commence at about 1:30 p.m. PT (4:30 p.m. PT).
