Howard sets triple jump mark
February 27, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
Howard leapt 38-8.75, improving her old PR (37-4) by nearly 17 inches and breaking the former school record of 38-6.25, set last year by Michele Turney. She took 12th in the event.
Almen cleared 5-8.50 and scored five team points. They totaled 14 points overall, a 9-point improvement from 2015, and took 12th place in the 19-team field.
“We did a lot of good things,” OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. “Last year we scored five points, this year we had 14, so you have to be happy with that.
“We had a fourth, a fifth, a sixth, a seventh and we were close to placing on a lot of other events,” he added. “The expectations are higher and people were disappointed if they didn't make a final, or score. That's what we're looking for.”
Freshman Juliana Mount led the running contingent by placing 13th in the mile in 4:52.31. She improved her PR by nearly two full seconds and posted the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Senior Bethany Imperial complemented Howard by going 38-6 in the triple jump, the third-longest performance in school history. She improved her PR by a foot and placed 13th.
Junior Holly Cavalluzzo took 25th in the 3000 meters in 9:45.97, a PR by more than 11 seconds and the third-best time ever at OSU.
The 1600 relay foursome of Kerissa D'Arpino, Kara Hallock, Venessa D'Arpino and Devin Collins took 12th in 3:50.92, the No. 2 all-time clocking.
The Beavers also set school records in the long jump (Jasmin McKenzie, 19-3.25) and 200 meters (Venessa D'Arpino, 24.70) on Friday. All told they posted 13 all-time top-10 times or marks in their final meet of the indoor season, held at the Dempsey Center.
All records and top-10 performances are for indoor meets only.
The meet concluded the indoor season. The Beavers open the outdoor season on March 19 at the Lewis & Clark Spring Invitational in Portland.
“Everyone who competed here is excited about getting the outdoor season going,” Sullivan said. “We did a lot of good things, now we have to keep moving forward.'
