UCLA edges Beavers 4-3 on Senior Day
November 06, 2016 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's soccer team closed out its home schedule with an entertaining 4-3 loss to UCLA on Sunday before a crowd of 458 at Lorenz Field.
The Beavers (6-8-3, 2-5-2 Pac-12) twice rallied from one-goal deficits in the second half, and appeared to have tied the game again in the 87th minute when Frazer Poulter redirected the rebound of a blocked shot into the UCLA net.
However, the goal was negated by an offside. The Bruins (9-7-1, 4-5-0) held on to complete a sweep of the season series.
Juniors Jordan Jones, Timmy Mueller and Jesse Garcia scored for the Beavers, who had won two consecutive games heading into Sunday. Jones had three goals in the two-game set with the Southern California schools; he scored twice in Thursday's 3-2, overtime victory over San Diego State.
Jones gave OSU a 1-0 lead at 14:42 when he finished a brilliant left-to-right run by rocketing a shot past keeper Kevin Silva for his sixth goal of the season. Seniors Matt Arbogast and Zach Striar, each playing in their final home game, assisted.
Jones's six goals and 14 points are both team highs. He has 51 career points (23 goals, five assists); he is fifth on the all-time goals list and seventh on the all-time scoring list.
UCLA replied quickly, however, scoring at 16:27 and at 20:49 to assume a 2-1 intermission lead. OSU outshot the Bruins 9-7 in the first half, when Silva had seven saves.
Mueller evened the game at 48:12, converting a UCLA defensive gaffe inside the 18-yard box into his fifth goal. He corralled a misplayed clearance and slotted a shot into the lower left corner.
UCLA retook the lead on a penalty kick at 70:28, but the Beavers tied it again at 74:28 on a goal by Jesse Garcia. Jaime Miralles got a head on defender Jalen Markey's right-to-left direct kick into the box; the ball bounced to Garcia, who sent it home for his third goal.
UCLA broke the tie for the final time at 79:22 on Abu Danladi's second goal of the day.
Sunday was the final home game for OSU seniors Arbogast, Striar and Devonte Small. Â Arbogast had a goal and an assist in his final homestand.
"These guys have been so good for this program," said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. "They've done a lot of heavy lifting for this program. They have blood in the bricks, and they have a massive legacy here. We're disappointed because we wanted to get a result for those guys."
The Beavers wrap up the regular season at Washington at 6 p.m. Â Thursday. The Huskies edged OSU 2-1 in double overtime at Lorenz Field back on Oct. 14 in their previous meeting this season.
