CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State men's golf head coach Jon Reehoorn announced Thursday that Shon Katahira has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the program beginning with the 2017-18 season.
Katahira, a native of Hilo, Hawai'i, joins a 2017 class that includes Keaton Gudz from Victoria, British Columbia and Spencer Tibbits from Vancouver, Wash.
"Just like Spencer and Keaton, Shon has a love for the game of golf and competing that will be an asset to our program," Reehoorn said. "Growing up in Hilo, his home course was a 9-hole municipal course. If Shon wanted to play or practice on an 18-hole facility, he would have to drive an hour-and-half each way to the Kona side of the island.
"To do this on a consistent basis and achieve like he did this summer shows not only a desire to compete, but a love for the sport you are playing. We are excited to welcome Shon and his family to Beaver Nation."

Katahira, who attends Waiakea High School, is the No.1-ranked player in the State of Hawai'i classic of 2017 by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard. He competed in the US Junior Amateur, finished in a tie for eighth place at the Junior Americas Cup and a tie for 28th at the IMG Junior World Championships.
Jon Reehoorn on Shon Katahira:
"Prior to this summer Shon had never played golf on the mainland. Traveling to San Diego (Junior World), Tennessee (US Junior Am) and Mexico (Junior Americas Cup), Shon showed he has a game that can travel and play on any kind of golf course."
