Beavers Finish Second, Kumpula Breaks Record
October 11, 2016 | Men's Golf
FAIRFAX, Calif. – It was a big day for the Oregon State men's golf team on Tuesday, as the Beavers finished in second place at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and senior Conner Kumpula broke a school record to help him win his first individual title.
Â
The Beavers finished the two-day, 54-hole event with a 25-under 270-278-279--827 at the par-71, 6,734-yard Meadow Club to finish six strokes behind tournament champion Arizona State (31-under 821).
Â
The 25 under equals the third-lowest three-round score in school history. The program record is a 27 under at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in 2010.
Â
Kumpula fired a 4-under 32 over his final nine holes to finish the tourney with a 15-under 68-64-66--198 and tie Ki Taek Lee of Arizona State for the individual title.
Â
A native of Albany, Ore., Kumpula is the first Oregon State golfer to win a tournament since Nick Chianello claimed medalist honors at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in 2013.
Â
The 15-under 198 by Kumpula breaks the three-round school record previously held by Vincent Johnson, who posted a 14-under 202 at the Northwest Collegiate Classic in 2005.
Â
Freshman Kyosuke Hara was excellent in his first collegiate tournament, finishing in a tie for sixth place with a 10-under 67-68-68--203.
Â
Senior Calum Hill, who tied the school record with a 63 in the opening round, rounded out the tourney with a 3-under 63-72-75--210 for a tie for 27th place.
Â
Senior Kevin Murphy finished in a tie for 61st with a 5-over 72-76-70—218 and junior Jonas Liebich carded a 14-over 78-74-75--227 for a tie for 75th.
Â
The Beavers have two weeks off before the three-day, 54-hole Saint Mary's Invitational, which will be held Monday, Oct. 24 through Wednesday, Oct. 26 in Monterey, Calif.
