Shelton Gets USMNT January Camp Call-Up
January 06, 2016 | Men's Soccer
CARSON, Calif. – Former Oregon State forward Khiry Shelton will join the U.S. Men's National Team for its annual January camp, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced today.
The camp, which runs from Jan. 11-Feb. 6 and contains a mix of Senior Team members and a host of players age-eligible for the U-23 MNT, will culminate with friendlies against Iceland on Jan. 31 and Canada on Feb. 5. Both matches will be played at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
Shelton competed with the US Under-23 National Team in a pair of friendlies against Brazil in November, starting both matches. He is joined on the roster for January camp by numerous USMNT mainstays, including Michael Bradley, Matt Besler, Jermaine Jones, Jozy Altidore and Gyasi Zardes, as well as New York City FC teammate Mix Diskerud.
Shelton, who was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, started his professional career on a strong note this season. The rookie recorded an assist in his first career start on April 19, and followed that up by scoring the game-tying goal in stoppage time against Chicago Fire on May 15. Despite missing time this year due to injury, Shelton played in 16 matches and made six starts, playing alongside the likes of Andrea Pirlo, David Villa and Frank Lampard with New York City FC.
During his senior season with the Beavers, Shelton earned Pac-12 Player of the Year and All-Far West Region honors. Shelton finished that season with a Pac-12 leading 32 points, good for third on the Oregon State's single-season list, and a new record for an OSU senior. Shelton ended the year with 12 assists, one short of an Oregon State school record, as he helped lead the Beavers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003 and the first NCAA Tournament victory in school history.
