CORVALLIS, Ore. – Following its final home meet of the season this past weekend, the Oregon State swimming team continues the 2015-16 season this weekend with a pair of dual meets on the road, as the Beavers are set to face the Washington State and Idaho swimming teams.
Oregon State will face the Cougars at 5 p.m. PT on Friday night at Gibb Pool in Pullman, Wash. The Beavers will bookend the weekend with a dual against the Vandals at 11 a.m. PT on Saturday at the UI Swim Center in Moscow, Idaho.
“The Washington State dual meet marks a big rivalry meet for us, so we want to swim as fast as we have in any of our dual meets this year,” Oregon State head coach Larry Liebowitz said. “It's usually an emotional meet, and the two teams really get up for each other. It should be a fun meet to be at, and to be part of. I'm hoping that we can bring the meet down to the last relay and then pull it off at the end.”
The Oregon State swimming team carries the momentum of a pair of dual meet wins on Senior Day last weekend, as the Beavers defeated Willamette, 138-78, and Southwestern Oregon CC, 143-62. Oregon State won each of the first nine events, and accounted for the fastest times in the final three events, which the Beavers exhibitioned.
Washington State is 1-3 thus far this season in Pac-12 dual meets, defeating Arizona State, 115-90, but falling at home to Stanford and California, as well as on the road at Arizona. This season, the Cougars also have dual wins over UNLV, San Diego State, New Mexico and Seattle.
The Cougars finished eighth at last year's Pac-12 Championships with 369.5 points. The last time the two teams met, Washington State defeated Oregon State, 187-75.
The Beavers' second opponent this weekend, Idaho, will be hosting Oregon State for its Senior Meet. In its only other two home meets of the season, the Vandals defeated Simon Fraser, 154-51, as well as Northern Colorado, 217-83.
“Our team has made steady progress,” Liebowitz said. “We had a meet earlier this year in Houston where we swam much faster, so we need to try to go faster than those times. I think that the races this weekend should set us up very well.”
Following this week's action, the Oregon State swimming team is set to return to the pool for its final meet of the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 30, when the Beavers travel to Boise, Idaho for a dual meet at Boise State. The meet is set to be held at the Boise West YMCA.
