LAST TIME OUT: Kevin Murphy had three eagles in the final round of the Saint Mary's Invitational last week to help the Beavers finish third in the opening tournament of the fall season.
Murphy fired a 3-under 68 at the par-71, 6,868-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course to conclude the tourney in a tie for fourth place with a 1-under 73-71-68--212. It was the second top-five finish of his career and just a spot back from the tie for third he recorded at the Duck Invitational as a freshman.
As a team, the Beavers had a solid start to the 2015-16 season, finishing third in the 15-team field with a 17-over 294-285-290--869. San Diego State won the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 1-under 851 and host Saint Mary's finished second with a 3-over 855.
Murphy dropped eagle putts on three of the four par-5's and added three birdies for the 3-under 68, which is the lowest score of his collegiate career. He had posted three 3-under 69's in his first two seasons at Oregon State.
Chris Tedesco and Jonas Liebich each had career-best finishes, as they both tied for 13th place with a 3-over 216.
Tedesco went 73-68-75 over the three days to better the tie for 33rd place he had at the Duck Invitational last season. Liebich shot the third sub-par round of his career on the final day, a 1-under 70, to better the tie for 27th place he had at last year's Golfweek's Conference Challenge.
Conner Kumpula finished in a tie for 42nd place with a 12-over 74-74-77--225 and Trevor Yu wrapped up his first collegiate tournament with a 14-over 75-74-78--227 to finish in a tie for 53rd place.
Competing as an individual, Tyler Carlson carded a 17-over 75-78-77--230 to finish in a tie for 61st place.
Sean Walsh of Gonzaga fired a 5-under 66 in the final round to win medalist honors with a 5-under 208. Saint Mary's teammates Jonathan De Los Reyes and Pavan Sagoo tied for second with a 3-under 210.
LAST YEAR AT THE HUSKY INVITATIONAL: It was a pair of Oregon State freshmen who stole the show in the final round of the Husky Invitational last year, as Jonas Liebich fired a 1-under 71 and Tyler Collier carded an even-par 72 to help the Beavers finish the two-day, 54-hole tournament in seventh place.
Liebich had three birdies and two bogeys to post his first collegiate round in red figures and Collier capped a terrific start to his college career with three birdies and three bogeys to finish in a team-best 10th place.
The newcomers helped the Beavers maintain their place on the leaderboard after Monday's 36 holes, finishing with a 20-over 300-291-293--884 at the par-72, 7,179-yard Gold Mountain Olympic Course.
Collier was rock solid all three rounds with a 1-over 73 and pair of even-par 72's for a 1-over 217 that notched him a top-10 finish in a very competitive field. The Chico, Calif., native dropped eight birdies over the 54 holes with six of those coming on the back nine.
Liebich, who also competed in the team's first tournament of the 2014-15 season, bounced back from a tourney-opening 79 to card a 3-over 75 and 1-under 71 and move into a tie for 35th place, while Brian Jung recorded the fifth top-20 finish of his Oregon State career with a 5-over 72-74-75--221 for a tie for 17th place
Alex Franklin was 6 over through nine holes on Tuesday before rallying with three birdies and six bogeys to shoot a 3-over 75 and finish in a tie for 27th with a 7-over 78-70-75--223. Kevin Murphy, who filled in for an injured Conner Kumpula, posted a 12-over 77-75-76--228 for a tie for 48th place.
Washington held an individual tournament at the par-71, 6,707-yard Gold Mountain Cascade Course. Five Oregon State golfers competed in that event and their results are: 3. Brett Johnson 70-71-72--213 (E); t5. Chris Tedesco 73-71-71--215 (+2); t8. Scott Kim 72-69-75--216 (+3); t14. Tyler Carlson 73-74-71--218 (+5); 41. CJ Sitton 81-81-82--244 (+31).
