September 16, 2015 | Men's Golf
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Kevin Murphy had three eagles in the final round of the Saint Mary's Invitational on Wednesday to help the Oregon State men's golf team finish third in the opening tournament of the fall season.
Murphy, a junior from Rogue River, Ore., fired a 3-under 68 at the par-71, 6,868-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course to conclude the tourney in a tie for fourth place with a 1-under 73-71-68--212. It's the second top-five finish of his career and just a spot back from the tie for third he recorded at the Duck Invitational as a freshman.
As a team, the Beavers had a solid start to the 2015-16 season, finishing third in the 15-team field with a 15-over 294-285-288--867. San Diego State won the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 1-under 851 and host Saint Mary's finished second with a 3-over 855.
Murphy dropped eagle putts on three of the four par-5's and added three birdies for the 3-under 68, which is the lowest score of his collegiate career. He had posted three 3-under 69's in his first two seasons at Oregon State.
Senior Chris Tedesco and sophomore Jonas Liebich each had career-best finishes, as they both tied for 13th place with a 3-over 216.
Tedesco went 73-68-75 over the three days to better the tie for 33rd place he had at the Duck Invitational last season. Liebich shot the third sub-par round of his career on the final day, a 1-under 70, to better the tie for 27th place he had at last year's Golfweek's Conference Challenge.
Sophomore Conner Kumpula finished in a tie for 42nd place with a 12-over 74-74-77--225 and freshman Trevor Yu wrapped up his first collegiate tournament with a 14-over 75-74-78--227 to finish in a tie for 53rd place.
Competing as an individual, senior Tyler Carlson carded a 17-over 75-78-77--230 to finish in a tie for 61st place.
Sean Walsh of Gonzaga fired a 5-under 66 in the final round to win medalist honors with a 5-under 208. Saint Mary's teammates Jonathan De Los Reyes and Pavan Sagoo tied for second with a 3-under 210.
The Beavers return to action next week at the Husky Invitational, which will be held on Monday, Sept. 21 and Tuesday, Sept. 22 at the Tumble Creek Golf Course in Elum, Wash.
