CORVALLIS – Oregon State 2015 signee Christian Lucatero has opted to forgo his collegiate career, signing a professional contract with Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo, the club announced Tuesday.
“I'm very happy for Christian, his family and the Dynamo organization,” said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. “Not only is Christian a superb player, but a great kid. This continues to demonstrate the caliber of players who are attracted to craft their trade at Oregon State and eventually play at the next level. Christian's time for the next level happens to be sooner than later and I fully support him.”
Lucatero built on that first impression throughout the rest of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy season, where he scored 26 goals in 27 games, and a summer training with the first team to earn a professional contract.
A left-footed attacking midfielder, Lucatero finished his Houston Dynamo Academy career as one of the most accomplished players in the program's history. The 18-year-old was honored as the USSDA Central Conference Player of the Year this season and named the Dynamo Academy Player of the Year in 2013 and Players' Player of the Year in 2014.
As a dual national, Lucatero has been called into youth national team camps for both the United States and Mexico but hasn't declared a preference for either side as of yet.
