Black edges Orange in intrasquad
November 05, 2015 | Wrestling
Corvallis, Ore. – The Black team defeated the Orange team 23-17 on Wednesday night at Gill Coliseum in the Oregon State wrestling team's annual intrasquad match, the final tuneup before the start of the regular season on Sunday.
“I thought there were some good things,” OSU coach Jim Zalesky said, noting that it's often difficult to compete against an opponent you're very familiar with because you face them in practice every day.
“There are things as a coach you have to look at [for the team] to work on. Mental things, little things like watching the clock, not building your lead, wrestling hard the first period and then slowing down,” things of that nature.
“I thought Abe Rodriguez and Seth Thomas really used their hands well, how you want to use them. Those two guys wrestled how I want us to wrestle. They wore the other guy down using their hands.
“We have to get more guys doing that, more guys attacking the whole time. But guys did some great things, and we can build on it.”
Rodriguez is a redshirt sophomore 157-pounder who just missed advancing to NCAAs last season. Thomas is a senior who qualified for NCAAs after placing second at 165 pounds at the Pacific-12 Conference tournament.
There were no pins. Redshirt sophomore heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi, back in action after a redshirt year, won by technical fall. Redshirt junior Joey Palmer (133), freshman Alex Rich (141), Rodriguez, Thomas and freshman Collbran Meeker (165) all won by major decision.
The Beavers open the regular season on Sunday at the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University in Forest Grove. They begin the dual meet season on Nov. 15 against West Virginia, Northern Iowa and Nebraska at the Northeast Duals in Albany, N.Y.
“I want to see bonus points, more aggression,” on Sunday, Zalesky said. “We have to build on this and keep getting ready for next weekend,” and the big test back in Upstate New York. “That's going to be a tough weekend.”
Redshirt freshman Corey Griego (184) and redshirt sophomore Cody Crawford (197), projected starters, did not compete because of a shortage of depth at their respective weight classes.
