HOUSTON, Texas – Senior Sammy Harrison won the 1,650-yard freestyle with the second-fastest time in school history to highlight multiple top-10 performances and lead the Oregon State swimming team to a sixth-place finish at the Phill Hansel Invitational held at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston.
The final tally for Oregon State was 703, just behind 707.50 points compiled by fifth-place Colorado State. Rice won the Phill Hansel Invitational with 1,121.50 points.
Harrison clocked a time of 16:21.00 to win the 1,650 free by over 11 seconds, recording her third victory of the weekend. The Henderson, Nev. native's time was also good enough to meet NCAA D1 B qualifying standards, the second event she accomplished that feat in after doing the same in the 500 free on Thursday.
Harrison has owned the school record in the 1,650 free since clocking a time of 15:54.61 last season. Her time of 16:21.00 on Saturday ranks No. 2 all-time at Oregon State, passing former All-American Naya Hagashijima's time of 16:27.59 from the 2002-03 season.
Anni Hecker posted the Beavers' next highest individual finish, placing fifth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.15 as well as a time of 51.09 in preliminaries. The Seattle, Wash. native's preliminary time ranks as the 10th-fastest by any swimmer in OSU history.
Czsarina Isleta also entered the top-10 on OSU's all-time list on Saturday, clocking a time of 2:16.29 in the 200-yard breaststroke, the sixth-best time in school history.
The Beavers closed out the weekend with another top-five finish in a relay, this time placing fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:25.93. The relay was swam by the foursome of Andrea Young, Hecker, Constance Toulemonde and Harrison, and were edged out by Houston by one hundredth of a second (3:25.92).
The Oregon State swimming team returns to action for the U.S. Winter Nationals held in Federal Way, Wash. The meet will take place all day from Thursday, Dec. 3 through Saturday, Dec. 5. Following that meet, the team will have over a month off before hosting Utah in a dual meet at Osborn at 5 p.m. PT on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016.
