Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State men's soccer team dominated the second half and outshot California 19-10 overall but came up on the short end of a 2-1 score on Sunday in a Pacific-12 Conference game at Lorenz Field.
"We were a little flat coming out today," said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. "I'll give our guys credit for the second half, because we tried to make amends. We pressed well, and their keeper made some fantastic saves."
Cal (9-5-2, 4-3-2 Pac-12) stunned the Beavers with goals at 6:14 and 22:02 to take a 2-0 advantage but OSU (7-7-1 overall, 2-4-1 Pac-12) righted its ship and drew within 2-1 at halftime. Sophomore forward Jordan Jones slammed home his sixth goal of the season at 38:36, assisted by sophomore forward Timmy Mueller and freshman midfielder Hassani Dotson.
Jones' goal broke a lengthy scoreless streak for the Beavers, who had been shut out in successive losses at Stanford, at Washington and by Stanford in Friday's weekend series opener with the Bay Area schools.
OSU pressed for the equalizer throughout the second half but could not solve Cal's defense. The Beavers had seven second-half corner kicks, 12 shots and several near-misses but never found the back of the net.
Jones and senior midfielder Jaime Velasco had four shots each and Mueller, Dotson, freshman forward Don Tchilao and junior forward Devonte Small added two apiece for OSU. Sophomore goalie Nolan Wirth had two saves.
The Beavers resume Pac-12 action on Friday with a 2 p.m. game at UCLA. OSU upended the Bruins 1-0 in two overtimes at Lorenz Field back on Oct. 2 in their previous matchup this season. They then play at San Diego State at noon on Nov. 8; OSU downed the Aztecs 1-0 at Lorenz Field on Oct. 4.
