NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – Senior Chris Tedesco and junior Conner Kumpula both carded an even-par 72 in the final round of the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational to lead the Oregon State men's golf team on Tuesday.
The Beavers wrapped up their third of four fall tournaments in 14th place, shooting an 11-over 288-290-293--871 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. The first round was played at the par-71, 6,834-yard Ghost Creek Golf Course, while the second and third rounds were played at the par-72, 7,015-yard Witch Hollow Golf Course
Wake Forest won the three-day, 54-hole tournament, which featured 15 teams all from Power 5 Conferences, with a 37-under 823. USC and Duke tied for second place with a 34-under 826.
Oregon State finished in third place at its first two tournaments of the fall season, the Saint Mary's Invitational and the Husky Invitational.
“It was a disappointing week for us, but we will get better,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “We've got to learn from our experience this week and continue to work hard on areas of our game that need improvement.
“We did a lot of things this week that we had avoided in the first two events. Some of that might be because of a comfort level. We need to treat every opportunity the same and be committed to doing what we do best.
“Mentally and emotionally we can continue to improve in making better decisions and not trying to force things when our rounds don't start exactly how we had planned.”
Sophomore Jonas Liebich was the top Oregon State player on the individual leaderboard, finishing in a tie for 42nd place with a 1-over 74-67-75--216. It was the best three-round score of Liebich's young career, bettering the 3-ovewr 216 he shot at the Saint Mary's Invitational.
Junior Kevin Murphy finished in a tie for 44th place with a 2-over 71-72-74--217, Tedesco moved up into a tie for 50th with a 3-over 73-73-72--218 and Kumpula concluded play with a 7-over 71-79-72--222 for a tie for 61st place. Junior Calum Hill shot a 14-over 73-78-78--229 to finish in a tie for 71st place.
The Beavers will compete in their final tournament of the fall season, the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, on Monday, Oct. 12 and Tuesday, Oct. 13 in Fairfax, Calif.
