Beavers Fall to No. 4 Cardinal in Even Matchup

Corvallis, Ore. –The Oregon State men's soccer team battled No. 4 Stanford on even terms for the first 80 minutes but the Cardinal tallied twice in the final 10 minutes on Friday to post a 2-0 win over the Beavers in a Pacific-12 Conference game at Lorenz Field.

“The only thing I wasn't pleased with tonight was the result,” said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. “I was thrilled with the way we played. The guys played with confidence, they played with a little swagger, and I think they enjoyed themselves out on the field. If we keep playing like that, we are going to win the rest of our games.”

Slater Meehan broke the scoreless tie at 80:08 on a counterattack following an OSU corner kick. Jordan Morris added the clincher at 85:17 after the Beavers (7-6-1, 2-3-1 Pac-12) had sent defenders forward in an attempt to tie.

Stanford (13-1-2, 6-0-2 Pac-12) outshot OSU 10-9 but possession was equal for most of the game. OSU had a wide 6-0 edge in corner kicks in the second half and a 9-2 advantage for the game and goalie Tyler Back had no saves in his second start of the season.

Sophomore Timmy Mueller had OSU's best scoring chance, in the 59th minute. He took a pass from senior Mikhail Doholis, broke free momentarily down the middle of the pitch and unleased a laser from about 20 yards that Stanford goalie Andrew Epstein deflected over the bar with an excellent diving save.

Doholis and sophomore Jordan Jones had two shots each for the Beavers.

Neither team scored in an evenly-played first half. Stanford had the best chances, but a header by Foster Langsdorf bounced off the crossbar in the 39th minute and OSU defender Hassani Dotson headed a potential goal off the line in the 40th minute.

The Beavers resume Pac-12 action on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. game against California at Lorenz Field. It will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. The teams tied 2-2 at Berkeley on Oct. 9 in their previous matchup this season.
