October 11, 2015 | Men's Soccer
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 16/21 Oregon State men's soccer team was unable to overcome a strong No. 3/3 Stanford side Sunday afternoon, as the Cardinal took a 3-0 win in Stanford, Calif.
The defeat is the Beavers' (7-4-1, 2-1-1 Pac-12) first in Pac-12 play this season, and marks the just the second time in 2015 that Oregon State has been held without a goal.
The Beavers played their second consecutive match without the services of senior midfielder Phillip Van Berkom, who was unavailable due to injury.
Don Tchilao was able to find some space down the right wing early in the match. The freshman created the Beavers' best scoring chance of the opening half hour in the 23rd minute, when he whipped a cross towards the head of Timmy Mueller. The sophomore forward headed the ball just wide.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nolan Wirth made a nice save in the 31st minute, leaping to his left to stop a shot that was fired toward the net. The Cardinal (9-1-1, 2-0-1) would get the breakthrough in the 44th minute, stringing together a nice run of passes before slotting the ball into the net to take a 1-0 advantage into the intermission.
Wirth came up with another big stop within the first minute of the second half to keep the deficit at a single goal, but Stanford would score on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to double the edge. The Cardinal added another in the 56th minute to go up 3-0.
The Beavers will head up to Seattle on Sunday for a matchup with Washington.
