Oregon 47, Oregon State 19

Reser Stadium
Corvallis, Ore.
Mike Riley
General thoughts on the game…
“I was very disappointed. The other disappointment I have is that we can't start practicing tomorrow for next year. Obviously in the first half in particular we gave up too many big plays. Right now today we are not a good enough offensive team. We need to score more points. With the number of points being scored now and with offense being as good as they are we have to score more points than we're doing. That's the state of affairs for today and we start immediately to fix that.”
What is next…
“For coaches it's evaluation of what we are doing, where we can go and the direction of everything we're going to do. Recruiting is a big, big issue for us. For players it's development time. We can't practice but we can train and get ready for spring practice. That's what will all be started immediately.”
Senior class…
“Sean really did have a great career. It wasn't an accident. He is extremely talented and a very hard worker who had the respect of his team from the beginning. He was a three-time captain.
It's important not to just single him out. There are some fabulous players and guys in this senior class. It's a very good group of people who played a lot of football for us.”
On Dylan Wynn…
“He has always set a high standard for effort and has absolutely never wavered in that from the minute he got here. He finished tonight with a performance that kept his identity intact forever. He is the ultimate grinder, he stays after it and I'm proud to be associated with a guy who works that hard.”
Next year…
“I can assure you that we will work very hard to get this thing fixed and get it ready for next year.”
Dylan Wynn - Senior Defensive End
On, the defensive struggles in the first half…
“We didn't execute our defense as well as we should have. They are a really good team and they capitalized on our mistakes.”
On, what the atmosphere was like in the locker room post game…
“It's sad, this is the family I have been with for four years and all of the seniors are a little bit down. However my big message for the underclassmen was to remember this feeling. I have been in the ups for Beaver Nation and the downs, and I just told them to go into the off season and do whatever you can to get better.”
On, what he thought overall went wrong during this game…
“They are just a really good team. With a team like that the margin for error is a lot smaller and they capitalized on mistakes that we made. That just how it goes, it's football and that is how it's played.”
On, why he thought the spread was so large this game as opposed to past civil war games…
“I'm disappointed but then again this is one of the best Duck teams I have ever played against, they fired on all cylinders and I wish them the best of luck in the National Championship.”
Sean Mannion - Senior Quarterback
His thoughts on the game…
You know it is disappointing. I'm really proud of this team not just tonight but every day at practice, every day in meetings, working out it is just the identity of this program. I know the scoreboard may have not looked the way we wanted it to I know everyone on this team and this program can be proud of the effort we put out tonight.
On the mood of the locker room…
There are a lot of emotions going on in there. It is disappointing the way it had to end. I think when guys put a lot of effort in something with each other it really matters regardless of how it ends it is always sad.
On program next year…
I think the future is very bright. We had a lot of young guys playing this year especially on offense and they have all gotten better as the year has gone on. This is a great program with a great coaching staff, from top to bottom and the players work very hard. With that combination it makes for great football. I have total faith that everyone will continue to work hard and that is how it has always been. I think this team will be great in the future.
On Mariota and Heisman…
He is a great player. I don't pay much attention to the Heisman but from what I have heard and knowing Marcus I think he is totally deserving of that.
Oregon
Head Coach Mark Helfrich
On whether the first quarter could have gone much better for the Ducks…
“Well, we could have executed a couple of things on special teams a little bit better and gotten touchdowns instead of field goals. But I'm really proud of how we came out in all phases. We knew kind of the challenge we were up against in a bunch of great guys here that are ending their careers. First and foremost, obviously Sean Mannion and just a ton of respect for what that guy has done throughout his career. Defensively, you have really 10 starters that are on their way out and we had to be ready to go. Our guys realized that last week, at the beginning of the week really well, and had a great week of preparation and believed in what they were doing. That was obviously a really good way to start out.”
On the performance by Oregon's defense…
“I think today they played hard and ran to the ball really well and tackled better. It's still not exactly where we want it to be. But anytime you can limit those guys to those points and numbers is big. But just the back and forth of us scoring either touchdowns or field goals in the first half and stopping them to nothing, that's the way you like that ratio from our standpoint. A new challenge and a different big challenge next week with Arizona with them playing the way that they have been lately, our guys will be excited to prepare for that one.”
On the play of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota…
“He missed a couple of throws today. Unbelievable. That guy is just such a stud. It starts at the beginning of last week just in terms of his approach, which is infectious to everybody else. When your best player is the guy setting the tempo of improvement of better of just that whole mindset, that's big, that's really important. He did some things with his legs tonight, he did some things with his head tonight that make him the player he is.”
On whether Oregon is playing their best football of the year…
“Well, I hope we have a great Monday. That's what we hope for; that every next thing is better. We'll try to get a little bit healthier and a little bit smarter and compete like heck during the week to get ready for Arizona.”
Marcus Mariota – Junior Quarterback
On how the offense was able to work so well today...
"It was the week of preparation. The coaches did an awesome job of preparing us for every look that they were going to give us. When we came out on that field today we were able to just play our game. "
On how big it was to start out with a great first quarter...
"It was huge. Starting fast for us is always the key within our team. To start out fast and get ahead quickly really set the tempo for the rest of the game."
On how the team is going to prepare for Arizona (PAC-12 Championship)...
"We're just going to continue to approach it like any other game. It is a short week for us but we've already had experience this year with shorter week against Cal. We're going to take tonight off and come back tomorrow to get prepared for the PAC-12 Championship."
On how they will compete against a team they've previously lost to...
"We're just going to play our game. Arizona did a great job setting and dictating tempo in the last meeting. If we go out and execute to the best of our abilities and execute the game plans that are put in front of us we should hopefully be successful."
On how much of his success is dedicated to the rest of the offense...
"Everything goes to them. This is a team sport and without those guys we would not be where we are at today. We have so many dynamic players and so many players up-front that are solid. Hats off to those guys, they really define the offense and how we play is really up to them."
Royce Freeman – Freshman Running Back
On first experience of the Civil War…
“Yeah it was exactly what I thought it would be, the fans were really into it and just the atmosphere. It was really great to be out there.”
On development this year…
“I have to give it up to Coach Camp (Coach Campbell). Every day in practice he has us working hard and he knows that week by week our body is going to get warn down. But he does a good job keeping us mentally focused.”
On getting back at Arizona in the championship game…
“It's not so much getting back at them as it is we want to compete well. I feel like we didn't compete well the first time we played them. They are a good team and it should be fun.”
On his dominating first couple carries and if it was the game plan…
“Yeah we always try to get the run and pass game started early. Whoever dominates the trenches is probably going to win the game. We were pretty dominating and our line did a good job opening things up.”
Byron Marshall – Junior Wide Receiver
On Developing in his role…
“It definitely expanded this year. Honestly, this year, I did not expect to be like this, but everything happens for a reason. I think it worked best for the team. It's exciting.”
Going into the Pac-12 Championship…
“I think we are really clicking on all the cylinders. Everyone is coming out excited and ready to play. We all want to get out for the next time we play – doesn't matter who it is. We want to come out and really play our perfect game.”
How to stay focused for next week…
“There is nothing to be tensed up about. It's just another game. They have beaten us twice, but it's alright. Stanford has beaten us twice but we put a good whooping on them this year. I think we played two terrible games against Arizona. We haven't given them a good game in I don't know how long. They beat us but we weren't at our best.”
On past losses to Arizona…
“Just to know that you lost to somebody, it just sits there and sits there. You move on, but you never forget. Now we have a time to right our wrong. We are excited about it as a team.”
On Mariota…
“He doesn't like to go down at all and just tries to make the biggest plays as possible. There are times when he [still surprises us], but it's what you expect and what we need.”
