CORVALLIS, Ore. – Junior defender Brenden Anderson scored a header in the closing seconds of overtime to lift the Oregon State men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Seattle University Friday evening at Paul Lorenz Field.
“This is a Northwest rivalry game, and in these kinds of games you can ignore the records,” said head coach Steve Simmons. “Seattle U is well coached, they're organized and I think they're going to be very good. You have to credit our guys. They were unflappable, and they believed that we were going to win this game.”
Seattle U (0-4-1) opened up the scoring in the 26th minute, when Miguel Gonzalez buried a header into the net on assists from Hamza Haddadi and Chase Hanson. The tally was the first goal Oregon State has conceded at Paul Lorenz Field this season, and it left the Beavers in a 1-0 hole for the second consecutive game.
Oregon State (4-1-0) answered back less than two minutes later, however, when freshman Devonte Small put junior Khiry Shelton in on goal with a pass that opened up the defense. Shelton placed the ball past the goalkeeper and into the side netting to level the score at one. It was the junior forward's second goal of the 2013 campaign.
Oregon State had a chance to go ahead in the 70th minute. Sophomore Mikhail Doholis played a pass that left senior Borce Atanasov one-on-one with the goalie. Atanasov hit a shot from close range, but was unable to beat the goalkeeper and the game headed into overtime.
The Beavers had another scoring opportunity early in the first overtime period. Junior Mike Reckmeyer passed the ball from the right wing across the box to Bjorn Sandberg. The sophomore midfielder hit a shot from 12 yards out that forced a diving save from the Redhawk net-minder.
Oregon State was finally able to record the golden goal with 13 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. Junior Will Seymore took a free kick from 40 yards out along the left sideline. The Soham, England, native launched a cross into the box that found the head of Anderson at the back post. Anderson placed the ball past the keeper and into the net to give the Beavers the 2-1 victory.
“I don't get a lot of scoring chances, so I try to make the most of my opportunities,” Anderson said. “We worked on those kinds of plays a lot in the offseason. Will and I have good chemistry. He put a good ball into the box and I got on the end of it.”
It was Anderson's first goal in nearly a full calendar year, with his last score coming on Sept. 15, 2012 against Gonzaga.
The Beavers recorded 19 shots on the evening, compared to 14 for Seattle U.
“You have to give credit to our guys,” Simmons said. “From the last 20 minutes of the first half on, you have to say we were on the front foot. We created chances and kept the pressure on them. The guys were just relentless.”
The Beavers will to return action Sunday when they take on Air Force.
