Welshman Golden in Double Overtime Win

CORVALLIS, Ore. – While Emery Welshman used a quantity of goals to help the Oregon State men's soccer team dispatch UW-Green Bay on Friday night, it was the quality of the one he scored Sunday to give the Beavers a 1-0 double overtime win over UC Irvine this afternoon at Lorenz Field. With the win, OSU went 2-0 in the Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic and improved to 5-2-1 on the season.
Welshman's fourth goal of the tournament and sixth of the season came in the 102nd minute when Glenn Paden led him to an open patch on the left side. Welshman drilled the shot past keeper Michael Breslin from 10 yards out to ignite the celebration of the vocal Beavers' fans in attendance.
“I'm glad our team kept it together,” Welshman said. “We just weathered the storm and fortunately I was on the end of that run, and this time it went in.”
After a tightly played first half, Oregon State opened up its offensive attack by outshooting the Anteaters, 10-3, in the second. Two of the better opportunities for OSU came in the second. In the 57th minute, Khiry Shelton led an odd-man attack but pushed a pass to Mikhail Doholis too far ahead on the right wing. Then, in the 88th minute, Colin Mitchell's header off a corner kick from Will Seymore was saved neatly by Breslin.
“I thought Irvine was the aggressor early,” head coach Steve Simmons said. “But I thought our depth helped when we changed some things up towards the end of the half to raise our energy level.”
UC Irvine (3-5-1) had the only shot in the first overtime, and it was also one of the Anteaters' best opportunities of the afternoon. In the 98th minute, Enrique Cardenas found daylight on the right side in the 18-yard box, but goalkeeper Matt Bersano cut the angle quickly and rejected Cardenas' shot. It would be the last shot for either team until Welshman's winner.
In the two-game tournament, Welshman scored four goals, two of which were game-winning goals, and added an assist. Those numbers made him an easy choice for tournament Offensive MVP. In leading the Beavers' defense to the only shutout in the four-game tournament, senior Chris Harms was named the Defensive MVP. Bersano was selected at the top goalkeeper.
The Beavers move into Pac-12 play next Sunday at Washington. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks and will begin at 4:00 p.m.
