Track and Field Close Out Competition at Pac-12 Championships

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon State track and field team wrapped up the final day of competition at the 2012 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships with Laura Carlyle competing in the 1,500 meters finals and the men of the track team competing in the 4X100 meter relay finals.
The team of Brandin Cooks, Malcolm Marable, Keynan Parker and Markus Wheaton competed in a tough field of relays teams this afternoon and finished in eighth place overall. They finished with a time of 41.71 after only have three practices leading up to today's competition.
"We had a few handoffs not go perfect and so I know they are a little disappointed because I think they could have gotten in sixth place," head coach Kelly Sullivan said. "But it is just impressive what they have done and I mean it is such an accomplishment. We have had three days of practice and one of those was yesterday."
Carlyle competed in one of the most competitive fields of the weekend in the 1,500 meter finals, which is the third year in a row that she has qualified for the finals in this event. She finished in sixth place overall with a time of 4:20.96, notching her second fastest time of the season.
"Well she really hasn't felt well all week because of her allergies," Sullivan said. "In the race today, it was the best field for this event in the country with three national champions running. Considering what she did today, it is great. She has made the Pac-12 finals for three years in a row now, and four years ago she didn't even really know what the 1,500 meters was."
The Beavers had a trio run in the 5,000 meters this afternoon with Kinsey Gomez, Sandra Martinez and Audrey Botti all competing. Gomez, the only true freshman from the Beavers competing this weekend, finished in 23rd place with a time of 17:41.80, with Martinez in 24th place and Botti in 26th place.
The Oregon State track and field team will return to action May 24, when a select group of athletes that have qualified for the regional will travel to Austin, Texas to compete at the NCAA West Track and Field Regional.
