Washington State 83, Oregon State 73
February 9, 2012
Gill Coliseum
Corvallis, Ore.

Head Coach Craig Robinson

Opening Statement
"That was certainly not expected. It was a disappointing performance. I was worried about having one game like that because we had been playing so well at home and it had been a while since we have had a horrible outing. This was a horrible outing. I feel bad for those guys in the locker room. They are still young and they still have to understand what it takes week in and week out to be a good team. We are still learning that."

On Washington State's big players having a big game...
"I don't know what it was with our front court. I was trying to find a guy that could come in and do something. You can't win this game when you are part-time playing. You can't have your guards play well and your bigs not play well. I am going to take a look at the tape. We have not been as good defensively as we have been in the past, and I don't know if that is because we have been trying to be better offensively this year. Their front court had a great night and it is hard to win that way."

On the defensive performance tonight...
"It was a lot of breakdowns. As a coach you are trying to figure out as it is going on, and try to prepare for it before it happens. The thing that comes to my mind first is that they were listening to everyone telling them that they won two out of three on the road and four of their last five, and it looked like to me that all they needed to do was show up to win. That is not the case and that is self-evident. These are young guys and they don't necessarily understand that."

On Jared Cunningham's performance and still losing...
"It is really frustrating because you don't get a many outings like that and you want to be able to take advantage of it in a positive way. He can't even take advantage of it because we didn't win and we played so poorly. He seemed to be the only thing going tonight."

On the leadership on the team...
"We have had a void on a leadership standpoint all year long. When I say void, I am talking about the vocal leader. We have several guys who lead by example, but sometimes you need a guy at practice or in games to just call everyone together and be me when I am not able to do it. We have struggled with that all year long, but that is what happens when you have a young team. We have one senior who is a walk-on and doesn't play that much. It is just a tough thing that we have to evolve into."

On Washington State two-three formation and its effectiveness...
"They played well and we played poorly. It is hard to put my finger on it. When I look at the box score, we still scored 73 points. We scored enough to win, but we just didn't stop them enough. I would be focused more on our defense as opposed to our offense. I mean our defense just can't give up 80 points in this league and win. You just can't do it."

On what he told the players after the game...
"I tried to make it absolutely clear that you can't just show up and win in this conference, no matter how crazy the conference is. You have to be prepared for everybody's best game in this league, especially when you are a team on the rise and when people pay more attention to us more. We were the doormat for so long, but now people are paying attention to us."

Junior guard Jared Cunningham

On the loss...
"Washington State came out early. From the beginning, they executed and made some open shots. They got us early...It's disappointing being our first game back at home. We had a good crowd and we didn't execute as well as we should have. We have another game coming up and it's another home game so we need to come out prepared. We need to fight to the end and we can't let up."

On Washington State's offense...
"They got a lot of wide open shots. Brock Motum and their point guards played well together. We just didn't defend them as well as we should have tonight."

On Washington State pulling away with the lead...
"It was kind of close in the first half for the first couple of minutes. They kind of pulled away and we started to settle down. We didn't really play together but that's something that we have to work on. We're a young team and we have to come out and be better prepared."

On teamwork and turnovers...
"There were a couple plays and turnovers that really killed us. They scored off our turnovers. That's what helped them in the end tonight. I feel like our team played hard tonight but we need to know to pick it up. We need to look ahead to our game coming up against Washington and we have a couple more at home we need to win."

Sophomore Guard Roberto Nelson

On what Coach Robinson's said to the team after the game...
"We just have to be more consistent. We have to take it into practice and make sure we're holding each other accountable. Also, making sure we match up better when it comes to the games. The coaches did a great job providing us a good scouting report; unfortunately we didn't come out and execute to the best of our abilities. We have to go back to practice and get back in the lab to make sure that we can have a better game next time."

On Oregon State's turnovers in tonight's game...
"We just have to control the ball a lot better and just make sure we are making easier passes instead of trying to force harder passes. We just have to come in, execute our game plan and make sure we don't get out of what we have planned for the game."

On Washington State's defense...
"It definitely slowed us down. As you know Jared had a great night shooting and stuff like that. The supporting cast and myself, we need to do a better job of making open shots. Tonight we didn't do a great job of that. Hopefully going into this next game with Washington we come out and make a little more shots so it is easier for him."

On the team's missed opportunities...
"A lot of the shots we missed tonight we are capable of making them. We just have to go back to the gym and hold our heads high even though this was a bad loss for us. We have to go in and make sure that we are going to make them next time."

On the University of Washington game this coming Sunday...
"This game is extremely big for us. They are a great team and very athletic. We just have to make sure we contain Tony Wroten and making sure that we hit open shots. We have to slow them down a little bit because they are very athletic and fast team. We need to bring our "A" game."
