Freshmen and sophomores combine for five victories out of the nine matches Wednesday night
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State underclassmen made the biggest splash during the Orange and Black wrestling intrasquad meet as three sophomores and two freshmen combined for five victories inside Gill Coliseum, Wednesday night.
Leading off the event was redshirt freshman Drew Van Anrooy who defeated senior Anthony Harris by technical fall 17-1 in the 133 lb. weight class. Following in Van Anrooy's lead was redshirt sophomore Alex Elder who also added a technical fall by a 17-2 margin over Joe Latham in the 165 lb. class.
Other victorious underclassmen on the evening included true freshman Joey Palmer who won a 10-5 decision over No. 16 Pat Rollins in the 125 lb. match. 141 lb. sophomore James Roberts pulled out a 7-2 victory over No. 2 ranked Mike Mangrum, while No. 11 Taylor Meeks won via technical fall versus Lucas Mondragon in the 197 lb. match (17-2).
A technical fall was also claimed by No. 9 RJ Pena over Toney Chay (25-9) in the 157 lb. weight class, while 174 lb. junior transfer Austin Morehead earned a pin against Cody Weishoff (5-4.)
Also winning Wednesday was junior John Tuck who claimed a 6-4 decision over sophomore Brian Engdahl in the 184 lb. weight class. No. 5 ranked Scott Sakaguchi picked up an 11-2 decision over 149 lb. freshman Jordan Henrickson.
The Beavers wrestle for real this Sunday at the Mike Clock Open in Forest Grove, Ore. The winners from that event as well as those who came out on top during the Intrasquad will help head coach Jim Zalesky decide his starters for the home opener against Michigan. That meet is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
Tickets to home Beaver wrestling events can be purchased online by going to beavertickets.com or by calling 1-800-GO-BEAVS. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the Oregon State ticket office inside Gill Coliseum, which is open from 9a.m. – 5p.m., Monday through Friday.
POST MEET QUOTES
Head Coach Jim Zalesky
On his squad's performance…
“Whoever comes out and sets the pace is usually going to win the match. To me some guys came out and set the pace, others came out and were trying to get the feel of the match. You saw that in a couple weight classes, where some guys were just more ready to wrestle than the other guy.”
On evaluating the intrasquad results versus those from the Mike Clock Open on Sunday…
“We will have to wait and see what happens Sunday because you are wrestling teammates (during intrasquad)and you know what guys do. Now you get to go against other guys and competition so now we will see who really steps up in that environment.”
Junior captain Scott Sakaguchi
On the underclassmen's performance…
“The younger guys looked really good today, I have to hand it to them. They looked a lot better than some of our older guys right away. It's good… there is a lot of competition in the room. That is what 'Z' (Coach Zalesky) wants, that's what we want and we need those guys to push us.”
Junior Captain RJ Pena
On competing in the intrasquad…
“I think it's pretty good to get out here, have a little warm-up match and get the juices flowing a little bit so we can get prepared for the season.”
