Van Anrooy, Mangrum, Sakaguchi, Pena, Elder, Morehead, Vinson, Meeks and Hanke are tops in their weight classes
FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Mike Clock Open has a distinct Orange and Black flavor to it in 2012 as Oregon State wrestlers took home nine individual titles out of the 10 total weight classes competing.
Not only did OSU claim championships in all but one weight class, but four of those title matches featured two Beaver wrestlers going head-to-head.
Those matches included returning All-American Mike Mangrum in the 141 weight class who claimed a 5-1 decision over teammate James Roberts.
The same could be said for the 149 pounders as returning All-American Scott Sakaguchi battled OSU freshman Jordan Henrickson for supremacy in the weight class. Ultimately it was Sakaguchi who came out on top with an 18-6 major decision.
In the 157 pound weight class it was again two Oregon State wrestlers meeting for the title, with junior RJ Pena pinning sophomore Nick Schlager (1:03).
It was the same story for the 165 pound wrestlers as redshirt sophomore Alex Elder won by major decision over sophomore Joe Latham 15-5.
Redshirt freshman Drew Van Anrooy claimed first place honors in the 133 pound weight class by a 7-5 decision over Clackamas Community College's CJ Palmer.
In the 174 pound weight class it was junior transfer Austin Morehead over Clackamas Community College's Trent Noon by a 5-1 decision.
Senior Ty Vinson was tops in the 184 pound weight class as he won by major decision (15-3) over Manvir Sahota from Simon Frasier University.
Sophomore Taylor Meeks pinned Peninsula Wrestling Club's Trevor Hall in the 197 championship (6:13) to take home first place honors and OSU's second to last title of the day.
Senior heavyweight Chad Hanke wrapped up the Beavers final title of the open with a 3-2 decision over Simon Fraser's Sunny Dhinsa.
"It was good to get out of the room and compete," said Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky. "We saw a lot of good things but also saw areas we need to work on."
The Beavers will have a handful of days to go to work before welcoming in Michigan to Gill Coliseum for their home opener, Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
